i looked into all 3 schools right there shore had junk equipment sloppy staff i knew i couldnt learn anything from them. I drove 30 years ago most of the schooling was a waste every school just teaches you to pass DMV test but I did that and was immediatly hireable. Smith and Soloman has the most knowledgeable staff of the 3 schools and look professional doing there job. DMV does there you will find a comfort level there testing at Miller Air Park my 82 blind mother could pass a test there. Just give em a call I think you will find a comfort level there testing. Besides your going OTR a 20 mile drive to Lakewood can't scare u. They have night classes too just call Tiname said I sent you

MJ, I am in a simillar situation myself. I was gonna give Swift a call, Why are you agaist them. please give me some advice if you have decided not to take that route.

hey jak it's not that i'm against them its just that i have heard so much negative towards them i didnt want to put myself in a bad situation before i even start..if i have to i will go with them though..who knows alot of it is usually disgruntled drivers that screwed up and blame the company..but like i said if i cant find a better situation for myself i will go with swift

So, what's so bad about going with Swift to gain the needed experience - especially if they have already said they will take you?
It's a foot in the door.
A bird in the hand is worth... what? -
There might be another way, at least to the point were you don't have to shell out any money to get more experience. But it's the cheap, long and hard way around to getting back in with the OTR driving; and you still might have to train with a Co. trainer for OTR truck driving afterwards. NOTE: I would first ask those OTR trucking companies about this your wanting to hire on with, before you do this. Some might say yes, some might say no, but you won't know unless you ask.
You can go to a temp agency, someone like Staffmark, and see if they could get you some temporary local driving jobs for more needed experience and get back to knowing the in's and out's of a tractor rig again. Try to gear the temp agency into getting you driving jobs for dry vans and flatbeds of course, most times they will, but I'm sure they'll want you to drive a dump truck every once in a while as well. Then you might be able avoid that refresher course some of the OTR companies want you to do, plus not having to dish out any of your own money in the process.
Again: Make sure you ask the OTR trucking companies beforehand and how many months you need to do this, before you can hire on with whatever company your wanting to hire you. My bet is they'll probably say anywhere between 6 months to a year, but then again, it could be less. Like I said, it doesn't hurt to ask, you never know.
