The only limitations are on Line 3. We are allowed to exceed 8 hour clock, 14 hour clock and 70 hour clock on Line 4-- there will be no violation.

I don't think that is correct. The way I understand it is that you are allowed 11 hours of drive time within a 14 hour window (or 16 with the exception). You cannot DRIVE after hitting 11 hours of driving or the 14 hour window expires. You can still work beyond the 14, but you cannot DRIVE if either A) you have already driven 11 hours since your last 10 off, or B) you have worked beyond 14 hours since your last 10 off.

A year ago I was working fuel on 24-hour fracs. DOT logbooks, no oilfield exemptions. We would routinely work beyond the 14 hour window for days in a row and we would drive in situations were we had a 10 off. So we would go days where we could not drive and would have to take turns taking our 10 off so that we could be the next person legal to drive if necessary. DOT did not care how many hours we were working as long as the person driving met both A and B above.

Edit: What scottied67 said. And I should have also said you can't drive after your 70 either.

This is somewhat similar to what happen to this driver that this thread is about. I wasn't using the ELD while I was driving but when the officer discovered the set up he was determined to do something. He said the ELD has to be connected to the vehicle. However once the vehicle is moving the ELD automatically places me on the drive line. He didn't like that response. So I am assuming he wants the owner of the company to explain this in the court. Didn't work. Company owner would spend to much time and money. Plus the court is in the same jurisdiction.

When some DOT officers do a inspection and everything is correct it becomes a test of knowledge. Had one ask me why I have two miles of incidental movement everytime I start to drive. Because I don't change it. It will do it automatically once I start driving. I am waiting for the response and I know it's comming. He tells me I have to edit it for accuracy. I told him I don't have to because it also takes 4-6 min. off my clock every time it does that. Next comment from DOT officer. Have a nice day driver.

I'm paying for satellite radio again. Not because I enjoy paying $20 for something I can get for $10 on cell phone or free. I don't want anyone thinking I'm touching my cell phone and driving.

Boy some of you don't get an important thing ...

It isn't what others do, cops, car drivers or cats, it is what you are supposed to do.

I get how you all feel it is unfair but we are targets on rubber, and we should stop acting like children.

Need to know how many hours you have left to drive, get a pack of post-it notes, write down the start of your drive time and put it on the dash, then you can use simple math to figure out how much you have left.

If anything elds are causing us to be dumb.

I think their is a law the ELD has to be mounted to the dash or a holder for the ELD so the drivers can see how many hours they have available without touching the ELD.

Sometimes I'll use a black marker and write notes on my windshield.

When pulling OD loads I'll write route on the top edge, so I don't have to look at permit in a screen or paper.

And for some drivers you can even pull a trailer that has Target displayed on it.

When I drove that truck with that set up I would set my GPS for the distance and check it against my log. I don't have that system anymore. But like Brandt says it is much better to be able to see the time without having to touch anything. Seems like that is going to be the gray area for the driver in this situation.
