Went to the Doc the other day to renew my DOT. I don't drive anymore but remain qualified......according to Doc, there are some serious changes coming to the physical that IMO could wipe out quite a few drivers....

According to her, BMI, neck size, BP and a long list of other requirements will be enforced including over age 42.as a trigger plus lung capacity and questions on smoking.....SO....if you hit any 3 off the list then you trigger a sleep apnea study requirement and get a 3 month medical. If your over 42, neck is bigger than a 17 and your BMI is over 33, it's a mandatory study.

I'm only briefing details here. Concerned drivers should dig in much deeper. Supposed to change in 2018.

Of interest to me is the cause of this. A poor lifestyle by occupation and a a lack of access to quality foods.....so once again, the driver will pay the penalty. Its just like the speed limiter issue on the plate....

Carriers think there is a driver shortage now? Just wait.....

I'm not surprised, there's always some new law and changes to illuminate more and more drivers.

There will be a big driver shortage for sure, which means huge pay increases for drivers. Supply and demand control the pay.
People in government devise all types of useless regulations so they can feel relevant and self-important.

They have tried to slip the sleep apnea stuff in on the new regs as an amendment but OOIDA caught them doing it without approval (it was added to an approved change AFTER it was approved). Not sure where your Doc got her info, but the last I heard, the BMI threshold was going to be 40. Some companies have their own medical guidelines as far as sleep apnea screening, but the government hasn't proven that OSA screening based solely on BMI is justified, there have to be other medical symptoms in order to force examiners to order a sleep study.

So if you are not driving why keep the Med Card? You can self certify to keep your CDL A and without a Med Card. They just tag you as Intrastate, but you cannot drive Intrastate. NC puts restriction K on your license.

Easier and tax deductible to give Doc $70. I didn't even know I didn't have to carry the card anymore lol....

It's not a biggie and I don't plan to do this again. ( stay qualified ) It's not worth the hassle with the testing, the fees , the restrictions etc. Just had a CDL since whenever and didn't want to let it go.....

Well the plan was to flood the supply side with Mexican drivers. Looks like they need a new plan now. I don't know what it will be but I can promise you it won't be You and I getting rich.

My message to all....Sleep apnea kills a lot of people annually. If you are at risk, take the test and comply. Untreated sleep apnea is linked to an exponential increase in serious crashed in commercial drivers. So, It may be your life that you are saving. Plus, most health insurance companies and trucking companies will pay for the test.

I didn't realize how tired I was or how bad I felt until I got treated for sleep apnea. Yes, it took me a while to get used to the mask but now I can not sleep with out it. Guys and gals.....take the test if you are at risk and pull up your big boy panties and comply!

    Flaming in 3....2.....1.....

Doc gets her info from gvmt. sources that dictate how she is to conduct a physical. and there is other symptoms required. Any 3 off the list triggers the study. I'll use me.....over 42, high blood psi and smoke....that will get me a sleep study. Any 3 off the list will do it.

I didn't go into it too deep with her......but based on personal observations there will be quite a few hands in a bind plus she mentioned being approached by sleep centers offering her $25 for referrals......
