I'm inclined to believe they all are shady in some form or fashion. That group of companies, I won't even lie, they really operate by their own rules there. Many of them are outlaw as hell, and they get drivers who don't mind the false editing of the ELD so they can make 2k or more weekly, you know, that "freedom" the OP is searching for. Working for them is about as close to the paper log days as it gets. There are good parts, but it's like dealing drugs, you do it long enough to get out of a predicament, but if you stay too long, you run the risk of doing serious damage to your license.

I am a 1099 company driver at Guardian Express. Only been with them since November of last year but they seem to be a fair company to work for. 70 cents a mile, $1,700 a week minimum, mostly no touch dry van work. They do not provide training though, they gave me a road test then after that a brand new Volvo and trailer. I believe though they require a few years of experience because of that.

For my first post here I'll say don't do it! I've talked to more than one driver from those companies. They'll charge you for everything. Damage, flat tires, late loads. You'll never see breakdown, layover or detention pay. They throw the high cpm out and naive drivers flock. It's quite sad.
