I was a military cop. Never got OT pay either. In my mind the American Police Force should all undergo military style training and have the strictest physical requirements as well as heavy classroom time. I’ve seen Houston cops so fat they waddle and puff and weave as they approach the driver side window of the car they just pulled over; you’d think the stop was made because the car sped out of a fast food drive thru and the cop was looking for a super sized bribe and milkshake.

Along with this training should come with an honor code whereas they know they’ll be treated more harshly for crimes they commit then the average citizen due to the trust and authority they are given.

With this should come higher pay and benefits for the police and access to better equipment. But they lose the badge if they get too fat and cant chase down an Antifa thug who just stole a Rolex and punched an old lady.

I have one good leg and can still run a mile in 10minutes easy. Because I have a nerve injury and wear a brace I'm not fit to be a cop.

But Joe blow two steps away from a heart attack suffering from alcoholism and diabetes is a fine deputy.

Or the local Barney fife who can't lift an 80pb bag of dog food because of a back injury. He can run but is made of paper and glass.
    I agree with you

I did pt tests twice a year and they would put you on the sideline no matter how many years you have in. I know its not the case everywhere. I also think each State should have a centralized police academy. Some states you enroll in a college type academy and when you are done you try to get a job. It should be you get hired first and go to the centralized academy that does all the para military type training where you don’t leave through out the week.

I know of a deputy here that was recently let go because of his physical status after being there a bit. Now he works at a very small town PD.

It's not just the physical ability of some I have an issue with.
I don't expect a police officer to be a lawyer, but there are so many that don't know the law or enforce what they "feel" should be a law it's disgusting.

The nation needs far more training for it's police officers. Less para military and more physical fitness, laws and social services training.

We don't need every cop to be a high speed low drag door kicker, we need the majority to keep their temper in check and enforce the law to the letter.

Then you better up the pay a lot. I can speak for the High Patrol here. Our training was separate from the normal academy. It’s 21 weeks then 10 weeks after you graduated the academy. We also had pretty extensive legal training. We handled our own cases up to 3rd offense DUI.

You pay well below average pay and that’s what happens. Most departments barely meet the minimum living standards.

Pardon the rant but I feel it's warranted. Hardly any police officers are what you described. In this world today you literally only hear about bad police. Now and then a dash cam video of someones life being saved by a police officer surfaces, but it's rare. I knew the laws of PA like the back of my hand. I didn't even need a short guide to cite someone for any section of the vehicle code. Now there were some laws I didn't agree with, I'll be the first to admit that. If I don't enforce those particular laws, am I a good cop or a bad cop? Depends who you ask. Darned if I do, darned if I don't. I was taught the law in the police academy, and I took an oath on a bible to uphold those laws to the best of my ability.

One person I worked with lost his temper on a regular basis, he was terminated. A person in the neighboring department lost his temper, he was terminated. Believe it or not, police departments DO weed out problems within themselves. They don't just sweep them under the rug and wait for civil suits to start coming in.

My first preliminary hearing with no ADA was a disaster. I remember the defense attorney being smart to me and I objected...the judge shook his head lol

Yeah we went head to head with top DUI attorney’s. I like to think I held my own but against them I know at least they ponied up at least 10k win or lose.

Problem with this statement is it's been proven time and time again it's a false statement. That whole Thin blue line brotherhood thing, plus unions working on keeping bad cops on the job. Then there is the Brady list,
No, the fiction that cops weed out their bad apples is simply that, fiction.
