Is there a right and wrong way to do it? I've been taught two different ways on how to do it, but quite frankly I like one way more than the other. Is it all about personal preference? How do u guys do it?

If its a very steep grade I kinda take a conservative guess at it considering my load weight and say highest gear in low range fourth and creep up making sure I have plenty of power and don't have to downshift. Slighter faster grades you can take in high range, but the thing to always remember on a 13 is don't forget to put your splitter down (low) if you have to downshift into the low side because it will lock you out of low range if your splitter is in high and you will lose all your momentum and have to start over at a stand still

in a 13? Just flip the button and go... It is just like driving any other tranny up a hill.. You just have a splitter which makes it easier.... or always has been to me..

lowest gear in high range. use the splitter to get more power. Aside from that, I never shifted in low range.

Lowest gear in the high range? Highest gear in the low range? Are we talking about climbing or descending?

Hit the hill running and down shift as needed during the climb. You will find theright gear when you no longer need to downshift.

Please tell me you folks are not hitting these hills in 7th gear?

What he said. I rarely hit a hill that has me drop below 6h, so why would you drop to 5h before you start climbing? Momentum gets you half way up most hills before you get down to a gear you can pull in, and all that extra speed makes for better time and fuel economy.

You are over thinking this OP.

Depends on if it's daytime or dark. Daytime I hit that sucker in the big hole. Then split the gear and progressive upshift till I hit the pulling gear. Sometimes if it's a flat to steep grade I might split the first couple of gears then go a full gear. That way I can pull longer in a specific gear postion. I must of driven slower trucks cause one the first things ya'll learn in these neck of the woods is how to go from high range to low range on a pull.

I was just reading the post that said lowest gear high range.... and was looking at the screen like a dog that is hearing a high pitch sound... Some people either can't read or drive or both... You just drive the dang truck...as Kmac is saying...

Sorry, I was not clear on what I originally posted. I will shift to the lowest gear on HIGH range if it came down to it. I will drive whatever gear the truck lets me. I have never shifted to the low range gears going UP. Even pulling fully loaded triple trailers. The only time I ever drive in the low range is when I am either starting up or pulling into a yard where the 5 MPH speed limit is the norm. I always stay in the high range.

LMAO.... you serious? you've never started up a hill behind another truck at 50mph?? For the longest i though i was a straight ### hat for pushing drivers up grades, i had to go mid west to see how the rest of the country does it..

What i have noticed is that a driver loaded light with take his sweet time trying to climb a grade only because he knows it's not going to drag him down.. I'm pretty much always at gross or over so every hill i hit it like it owes me money!!!!!!

Which brings to question that whole, descend a grade one gear lower then you climbed it.. well that would be me decending in 8th or 9th gear most of the time.. But hey, to each their own.. I come down it in what ever feels comfortable.. what i know i can control. It's all a learning process, the book is somewhat of a good guide, but i wouldn't take it to my grave with me.
