If a driver can’t speak english: seems unlikely they’d be able to read in english…. Ie low clearance, no trucks, weight restriction, no trucks in xxx lane: or notice expired insurance, registration, wrong info on registration or insurance. The list goes on

Back in the summer I had trouble communicating with 2 different drivers because of mechanical problems with their trucks. Neither had a CB… “I’m sure that’ll bring on the I don’t have or need or use a CB”…. So I couldn’t relay to him exactly what the issue was. I finally motioned to him while driving 65mph that it was broke, course he had no clue what was broke.

I give him credit for pulling in the pickle park to have a look see though, as I approached his truck I was pointing and telling him the issue I seen, but when he spoke it was obvious my words fell upon deaf ears. But…. he had an issue and I was gonna help what I could.

When I pointed up under the trailer to the maxi hanging by the air lines and slack adjuster he seemed to be very concerned. Although he could not make clear his words, he went to his side box and brought back a package of zip ties and motioned his intentions, I gave him a thumbs up and started peddling on west….

It's a steep enough of a curve coming here from an English speaking country - let alone non English. I struggled with everything from metric to imperial - local lingo - trucker lingo - just real basic stuff that everyone (me included now), takes for granted. But I wanted to assimilate, it was a welcome challenge, to be part of the team.

I think CA and probably other states have been offering CDL testing and license issue in whatever language you like - which goes against the federal rule for CDL A holders. I don't get it. You HAVE to speak and read English to get along SAFELY in this industry.

I always go back to Sun Lee - a Chinese national on a TOURIST VISA that had a CDL - ran into town in Republic,MO several years back - sandwiched 2 vehicles into the back of another semi at a light - came in hot from a 70mph to a 30mph - killed 2 or 3 folks.

Licensed out of CA. How this happens and still happens is beyond me.

Amazon is the new Swift from years ago, except with lethal consequences added. I stay the F away from them, regardless of where I gotta go, or what time I'm up against. And they're about as abundant as stupid deer this time of year.

EDIT - Swift, for the last few years that I've seen, is one of the safer carriers out there. It seems that every company has had their time in the barrel, Swift drivers, don't be offended. You're doing a great job now (at least in comparison).

Dad told me of when he was young, his brother had an ingrown toenail on his left hoof.

Poppy, that was my great grandfather, he told dad and his brother that if you smash that toe it will hurt, but it will bruise that toenail and it will fall off before too long.

Uncle Judd told my dad, hey, you catch me not looking hit that toe with a hammer so I can get rid of that sore nail.

Few days went by and dad stumbled out to the shed and found his brother using a file on a piece of metal. Being poor as a snake they hardly wore shoes anyway, dad said his brother had his hoof up on that wooden block holding that piece of metal he was working with.

He slipped around behind him with a hammer and was gonna hit that toenail while his brother was occupied.

Well, he got so tickled that when he struck with the hammer he hit him right up on top the foot instead of the toenail, needless to say that amplified the problem lol….
