That's something several former OD drivers weren't counting on. If an event is recorded and your phone is in your hand, it was an automatic termination. It's now a 2-strike policy, but expect to get chewed out if you're caught.

I really am not bothered by a camera watching me, I keep doing as I have done over the years, but what really irks the hell out of me is the radar that monitors following distance. It goes off constantly and the lady comes across the ELD and tells me all about it, like I am supposed put brakes on every time someone passes me and cuts back in front. When you are tied down to 67, you have a bunch of vehicles going around and cutting back in.

Here at OD that's what we've gotta do. My truck is set to 65, and the camera records an event if a vehicle is within 100ft for 4+ seconds at highway speed. Even if it records, they just wanna see a reasonable effort to increase the following distance. Lifting off the throttle and engaging the jake. If they see that on the recorded event they'll disregard it. Otherwise your manager will give you a number to call.

Mine has gone off when the vehicle is 500ft ahead. The thing is so erratic, one time it goes off 500 ft and then at 200 ft, you cannot ever tell when the thing is going to go off, it drives me nuts. Like I said, I do not mind the camera looking at me, but this following monitor makes me want to take a hammer to it.

Is the rate of OTR companies using cameras increasing?. The cost of the them keeping coming down and the reliability and image quality is much improved so I fully expect them to become more common but also I predict a huge push from the insurance companies for 360 degree exterior camera views. For a mega company they would be able to put them in every single truck and if they just reduced one mid size claim it would pay for itself so I think it is just a question of how soon it happens.

But at what level of detail can you be analyzed through these reflections. I've heard stories of people getting called out for the flickering glow from a video on their phones at night, which is no biggie; but can they actually see reaching down for your bottle of water or taking your eyes off the road to fiddle with the radio?
