Sounds kind fishy when you say they take a deposit for your truck. Plus if you quit then their expenses you have pay for. It’s their truck and they pay for everything including the money they spent to hire you.

I could see a small deposit if driver quits and abandon truck. The not so up to date companies will keep the money or say driver is responsible truck repairs or tires or diesel for going out of route or idle time for a/c in summer.

    Winner.

No matter the job, be it burger flipping or half a mil a year, there’s always a contract. For them to take taxes out of your paycheck, you have to sign off and allow the withdrawal. For health benefits and any insurance m there’s a contract. So, when OP talks about a deduction and whether or not it’s legal, what are the odds that he signed a contract to allow this?

People, you HAVE TO participate in your own rescue. No matter what the job is, read all contracts before you sign them. That way you don’t appear stupid by asking about whether or not deductions are legal.

    Six back quiet.

You only have power at a trucking company BEFORE you hire on. After hiring on you volunteered for the company policies. Whether something only happens at one company, 10 companies, or all companies doesn't change the fact you signed paperwork saying you agreed to their rules, even if you don't remember or agree now that you don't like those rules. If you won't look out for your own interest the world won't do it for you.

OK great, congrats on the job.

So they are a small fleet.
    Really??
Don't know, they better give it to you in writing (later why).
    Not your problem.
It makes a lot of sense, you are required to pay for a business expense that they and only they are supposed to carry.
Bullsh****, you are not a slave.
    Nope NOT LEGAL!

Illinios has this law - Illinois Wage Payment and Collection Act (IWPCA) that says an employer can not collect money for business expenses, truck damage is a business expense.
    QUIT!

    I am not kidding, QUIT!

If you don't wait a few weeks, tell them to return your money, and when they fire you, sue them and file a complaint against them with the Illinois Department of Labor and the Federal Department of Labor.
Doesn't matter if he signed a contract or not, first, in this case, they can't deduct anything for business expenses; state law precludes any agreement made for it. In addition, employment contracts need to be reviewed by a legal professional before they are signed, and most of the time, in this industry, you can't get a copy for a review.

Always tough following Ridgeline, and I think we're all in agreement to move on( in 91 days), but I bet you are going to see a whole lot more of this. I wondered what took so long. You think these mega pileups with trucks all askew goes unnoticed? I bet my heat assistance, these insurance companies are bailing out, and companies have no choice but to charge drivers a deposit. I know of several companies that are "self-insured" because rates are just too high. I've long said, make the drivers pay for the damage they do, you'd be surprised how safe the roads would get. This scenario is going to get a lot bigger, you'll see. In the future, I realize you are consumed with confusion, but make sure you read what you are signing. It's a lot harder getting out than going on.

My last job sprung this on me at the last minute. $1000 escrow to cover any Truck damages. Basically the deductible, or anything they decide that’s less than $1000. Big Red Flag. Told them I wish they’d have mentioned it, and it’s a deal breaker. They waved it. Eventually they couldn’t provide enough work. Too busy nitpicking over stupid things. Companies making money by screwing Drivers. They’re better at lying than Trucking. It’s too bad. I had to quit. They’re currently advertising almost twice the average pay per week. $2000 when it’s $1200. Recruiters a total idiot. Thinks he’s smart. Can’t communicate very well. Good at social networking and advertising. Only reason he has a job is because he’s family. Wouldn’t survive otherwise. Real Idiot.

Only worked for one company that started charging new drivers 1,000 for cleanup fee. Can thank a driver who on the back walk of sleeper spray painted painted a heart and his name and his girlfriend’s name on the back wall of truck. Ended up having to change up the back wall upholstery.

(they didn’t charge the existing drivers)
