Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with JB Hunt or Comtrak as an owner operator leased onto either of them hauling intermodal. I was a driver for JB on the intermodal division and never had a problem other than I just got tired of doing the circle. I need specifics if possible. I hear Comtrak pays a little more however you are responsible for trailer/chasis repairs (Lights, tire blowouts etc), and your deductible for cargo is higher but not much.where at JB you are not responsible for repairs, which how often do tires blow on trailers now a days. But I have heard the dot is all over comtrak so I of coarse really don't know if any of this is true. it seems that after fixed expenses im at about $1600.00, per week and reserves for truck repairs and that doesn't include the small truck payment I have and when I factor in not only my operating costs but my household costs as well it seems that all will work out. As long as I can get between 2500-2700 miles per week, when I was with jb I averaged 2500 miles per week at 62mph. So I would again appreciate real world experience not recruiters acting as drivers. I thank you, all for your time and insight.

I'm not sure who told you that you were responsible for repairs on chassis at Comtrak cause that's not true at all. Blowout's no, the lights...Comtrak supplies all drivers & O/O with ample supply of extra lights to keep in your truck. And I've been with them almost a year and haven't been hit by DOT one time. Not to mention you get a nice bonus if you pass DOT roadside inspections. I can't complain at all. Does the work suck at times, sure. The railyards can be a P.I.T.A if ya know what I mean. Not sure how much things would be different in your area compared to here in Pa but I can't imagine all that much.

Thanks for the info. As far as the tire/blow outs the recruiter said the drivers are responsible for them. Also, he said you can get 3000 miles per week which I don't see how that's possible when you just go from Chicago into Wisconsin and back and are home daily. Maybe you can give me some insight into that. maybe this is one of those recruiters that tells you what ever they need to help themselves out. Thank you, for your time.

Sounds like recruiter bs to me. Not sure why he would say blowouts were driver's responsibility. I've had at least three, never was my problem. Maybe he just meant it was on us to see they are fixed. Flats on the rail yard we just take straight to the railyard shop and they fix on the spot. On the road we just do a QC #22, tire repair request and someone is usually out there in a very short time to fix it. On the miles, I can't imagine getting that many just running where you are saying. I know here in Pa where I run we certainly don't get that. But I don't know how they pay there in your area either. The pay scale or type of pay may be set up different. I'm not too sure. You need any other info let me know. Thanks

hey dgman do you think if a owner operator with a brand new truck like a glider kit can make a good living with comtrak?it will have like a 2100 monthly payment.

Guys looking to work for Comtrak... GO ELSEWHERE!!! Honestly speaking in 20yrs of driving Comtrak is the worst company I've every driven for. Higher mgrs. say Atlanta is the most profitable Comtrak/Hub location, yet the average weekly pay for company drivers is less than $800 before taxes. I've had a truck on with JBH intermodal, Decided to try Comtrak as a company driver OMG!!!!!!!! jumped out the frying pan into a #### BONFIRE.

No one should be speaking highly of Comtrak. Dispatchers are very disrespectful towards drivers. Sometimes have to wait hours for rail billing, no drivers restroom, must use a #### nasty port-a-john. Their drivers turn over rate is CRAZY high due to very poor pay.

True you usually don't pay for blowouts if the dispatched repairman don't label it as a run-flat.. If he does it's 300 to 450 per tire. All around truth, both of these companies are not worth putting a truck on with them.

JBH, don't use their fuel because it's all junk fuel, causing injectors to go and many other problems etc... Dealing with these 2 companies has cause me to switch professions.

Well, not sure about where you were but in Harrisburg there are no company drivers any more. Everything is O/O. You must have just had bad experiences with people because our Harrisburg dispatchers/planners are nice people and go out of their way to help. And the dispatchers/planners I deal with out of Chicago are also great folks. To say no one should be speaking highly of Comtrak is just a stupid comment. You worked in one location as a company driver. My terminal is all O/O and I guarantee there are alot of folks there that will speak highly of Comtrak, and do. And the fact that some have been there many years speaks volumes. I wonder if your story doesn't have more to it than you are letting on.
