Before I begin, let me note, I am NOT a Con-Way Truckload driver or employee right now nor have a ever been. I am a passenger on one of their trucks with my boyfriend who is a solo driver and have been riding for almost 2 years now.

Ok now on to my point...

I love how important safety is to Con-Way, especially in the winter months where snow and ice make situations hazardous in many parts of the country.

A few days ago we were stuck in a blizzard on I29 in Iowa. Conditions went from ok to bad very fast and we shut down at a rest area on I29 just south of Council Bluffs. When we sent a message to Con-Way explaining the situation and letting them know we were shutting down, which would most likely make us late delivering our load, they said that they appreciated us stopping since the conditions were unsafe, that no load was worth risking our lives over, and that they would let the customer know that we would be running late. It was nice to know they wouldn't try and push us to drive in bad conditions even if it meant being late on the load.

We had another similiar issue come up last night. On our load from NE to VA we rain into freezing ran on I70 in MO. We shut down becausre the roads were becoming very slick. Again they said that they were glad we shut down and to remain that way until it was safe to drive.

We left out this morning because the roads had been salted and were ok to drive on. We are hoping to make it to KY but will most likely shut down soon after getting their because the roads in KY are supposed to be largely ice covered. This might make us late for a current load but we know they will tell us they would rather us be safe and shut down than try and drive in bad conditions.

The reason I felt compelled to post this is because before I was out on the truck, I always worried about my boyfriend having to drive in bad weather and something happening to him. When I came out I still worried. My first winter out we ran into very little bad weather so I didn't really get to see how the company reacted to drivers facing such conditions often and even being late on loads because of it. This winter, however, I already have since we seem to be catching a lot of the bad weather. It has reassured me a lot, especially since (if all goes well) I will be going to school and then coming here as a driver myself.

For drivers who care about safety and have family/friends they want to get home to I know this is an important issue so I hope this post may help drivers like that who are considering driving for CWTL.

Great post Katey! It's awesome to see that CW keeps the drivers safety in mind. I'm glad to hear that you and your Boyfriend are doing good and staying safe.

No, our truc does not have one. Some Con-Way trucks do though.

We just idle any time we are uncomfortable and have never had anyone say anything to us about it really.

He and his old co-driver had one put in. They order all the new trucks with 1500w ones already in them though.

They allow up to 1500w inverters and they want their shop to install it make sure it's done right. According to the recruiter I talked to anyway.

Seems like a really good company, definitely in my top 2. ;)

Katey is it true they don't allow the VuCube dishes?

As far as I know they allow them.

Never asked but I have seen one on a CFI/Con-Way truck before I am pretty sure.

I would recommend asking to make sure though.

Edit: My boyfriend said he wouldn't see why they would ban those. They allow people to mount DirectTV and Dish Network ones that are made for house so it wouldn't make sense for the to ban one actually made for trucks.

I spoke with Teresa in recruiting and she said they didn't. However I'm going to ask her about the no drill mount. It's not a deal breaker as they are pricey but it would be nice to have. :)
