In reality, about the only thing that would hurt a turbo is if you shut down immediately after a hard pull. Short of quickly pulling onto the shoulder and immediately shut it down, this doesn't happen in the real world . You'll almost always pull off the road and move around slow speed, under very small engine load, before you shut down. This low speed movement is sufficient to cool the turbo.

Doesn't hurt a thing to let it idle a couple of minutes after you park though. What you are trying to do is get the turbo itself, not the air your pyro is reading, to cool down enough as not to boil the oil left inside upon shut down.

    First truck with a pyrometer.

As others said, by the time I’ve idled around and into a spot, the pyro is at 300-350.

Set brakes, rub eyes, scratch . . And key off.

    And enjoy the silence.

Pulling in hot and heavy I’ll leave it to idle 5 minutes and kill it.

I let the engine shut down timer sets for 3-4 minutes do the work. It also let's the turbo slow down. When you shut engine off you cut off the oil to the turbo bearing. I heard they spin at 90,000 rpm pulling a hill.

As soon as I park I grab my dog and let him pee on turbo. I'm too lazy to do that. Cools turbo down in 2 seconds.
But first I turn off the engine so pee does not blow in my face.

Myself I'd kick the fan on manual and let it run for a few minutes. Get the coolant and oil temps down a bit. Once you shut it off the coolant stops moving and the heat just stays concentrated in the block.

I kick up the idle where about 60 psi of oil pressure with the fan on (manual mode). Once the Pyro reaches 300* i kick off the idle and fan, let it idle about a minute,(let the turbo wind down) then kill the truck.
This procedure are only for “Real Man Card Engines” CAT RULES..........

Also switch on the fan during the cooldown.
    1000 RPM 4min. , 600 for 1 min.

I wait for pyro to bottom out or close and kill it. 25 years and over 1.3 mill on 1 engine and never a turbo failure.
Anything else is wasting fuel and more importantly my time

Crude Truckin' and Oldironfan Thank this.
