I wonder how many drivers are not going to make it home for Christmas? I live a few miles from the Keebler in Mariemont Oh and while shopping with my son I saw about 6 Cretes heading that way to pick up. I have to leave tomorrow afternoon in order to deliver my load on time. So much for cretes promise to get you home for Christmas.

Getting you home for Christmas is Cretes policy, during a normal season...but with the economy as far down as it had gotten...we should all be thankful that we have a company to work for I guess. After reading about places like Arrow just suddenly locking the doors, and places like YRC losing jobs like they are...then Gainey and Jim Palmer being sold to non-trucking investment companies, there's no telling how many more companies will be closed before this thing turns around and gets back on track. At least we aren't on the verge of going under any time soon (I hope, since we drivers are always the last to find out anything)

Sort of helps put all of the complaining I have been doing lately about our regional LTL company in perspective. They have closed terminals, reduced the areas we service and cut driver's hours. We don't know from day to day if we will have a job. Taking care of our family's financial needs is important but loving them and appreciating every moment we have with them is precious. Considering Crete if I have to go OTR. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

FWIW... The first five years I was with Crete, I worked out a deal with my terminal manager so that I'd be home for Thanksgiving, and worked Christmas in return.

On two occasions, I'd had a load that got me through home for about 24 hours late Christmas Eve(ning), and then I'd leave late Christmas Day, or the day after Christmas.

Believe it or not, there are some people who work Christmas - perhaps they don't have families, or they are a husband/wife team who are going somewhere to spend New Years with their children.

My point is, don't automatically assume that Crete broke it's promise to get drivers home just because you see a Crete truck on the road Christmas.

No assumptions here. In a conversation with my terminal manager it was confirmed that Crete did a very poor job this year of getting drivers home. Ohio was so overbooked on freight they would not let guys go home xmas eve for crying out loud.

Until I get back home at the end of the month(of find some free wi-fi somewhere) I'll be offline. Seems as though with all the excitement of being a grandpa I left w/o my aircard. And all I have is this stupid POS Blackberry(aka paper weight). Have tried to 'reply' to several threads and even view my private msg's only to be thwarted by this cursed piece of junk. So until I get the ole laptop online again - I'm here, but not... C'ya Happy New Yearnext

Unfortunately with Verizon you can't tether w/o paying extra. There is gray market software and hardware that works, but since I don't pay the tethering data charge, Verizon could terminate my contract if they figured it out, and w/my aircard I have 8 lines tied to my acct.(not all paid by me fortunately) but at $175 ea. for early termination...I would have to sell my 1st born to settle with them.
