I'm in orientation and have been blown away by the amount of rules and paperwork.
I had to sign forms saying...
I understand that... "Layover will be not paid due to... lack of freight".
Wondering if they would pull some BS over me if they make mistakes, don't wanna deadhead me, would wait for a better load and then say... well it was "lack of freight".
Have they ever done that?
I had to also sign that "not all detention will be paid".
Plus there's a bunch of paperwork to file when detention does occur.
Do ya'll get paid and how often when detained?
Also found out that even though I could have an ELD.. which the company can always view... I still have to message in my hours everyday.
Found that strange...
How often to you all get a "choice of available loads"?
Terminal manager came in and said... most of the population lives in the Northeast.. you will be going there.
How often do you midwest or eastern US drivers get sent to the Northeast and/or NYC?
I have signed more forms than when I bought my house, 30X at least.
It's crazy the details and rules they go through and make everybody sign.
Are things more relaxed once I head out? or is all this for real?
thanks
Crete / Shaffer drivers.. I've got some ?????s for you please

If your having to sign papers about it, my guess is that it is for real.
mje Thanks this. -
that's why I wanna know what really happens -
Clearly your time isn't valuable if they wont pay layover pay and want you to agree to that. Then, in that case, they can have you sit for days if they so choose. Eff that, I can't believe people work under these conditions..In life time is the thing you can never get back. You can somewhat make up lost income, but once time is gone, it's gone.

Okay, first of all, this company is run by lawyers which makes them somewhat tedious with all the rules etc. But once you get rollin, you will realize that things run pretty smoothly most of the time. I used to worry about getting screwed over by this company when I first came here in 07 but it never happened to me. My pay is always exactly right. I don't get detained too often but I get paid about half the time I put in for it. It happens so seldom, I don't even worry about detention. Regarding layovers, they don't like for anyone to sit still too long. Once you send in your empty call, you will get a preplan within 10 or 15 minutes in most cases. Crete has freight everywhere. But when there is no freight, they don't mind deadheading you out. My two longest deadheads were from Miami to Jacksonville FL. and Phoenix AZ to Los Angeles CA
In seven years, I've never delivered in any of the five boroughs of NYC. If you do, you get and extra $100. I'm 48 states and I get to the NE about as much as anywhere else. I can't remember when I was last in New England. They stopped giving multiple load offers. If you don't like what they offer, they might give you something else.
Welcome aboard.freightwipper and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
It doesn't relax. Every thing in orientation is real. Most after a while learn how to work around the system. Almost everything you make is your mileage pay. Very little else. You will get some dispatches that say plain as day that no detention with customer. They clearly negotiate detentionless contracts with some customers. All this was covered in the 2 large Crete threads. You make a decent living with Crete but the vast majority of their drivers would privately agree that it has become a miserable place to work and are always scoping other options. It is the most lawyered up outfit I have experienced. But the wage is decent. Few dispute that. Equipment is ok. It's a living. Not much else.

Did you pick Crete/Shaffer because they have a terminal near you? If so, maybe that influenced you too much. Many companies it's pretty cut & dried where the assessorial pays are and when they're paid; real simple. That's a reason tanker company drivers just smile and truck on down the highway.
Shaggy Thanks this. -
1. I was done at my current company getting less than 30CPM and screwed over when I knew I could do better 100% elsewhere no matter where it was.. I was offered more.
2. I have 7 months experience, I researched long and hard and it seemed I needed at least a year to try and get a good tanker or LTL job.
3. Crete has decent CSA scores which was very important to me because I don't play games when it comes to doing things the right way.
4. They offered me .43 CPM which certainly seemed like a lot for my experience level.. for example that is MORE than all the drivers i knew of at my last job, even ones with 10 years experience.
5. Generally from my research drivers don't wine about them nearly as much as other carriers.
6. They have a terminal near me, let me bring the truck home.
I almost chose Southeast carriers at .37 and NO NORTHEAST, no northeast would certainly have made me very happy.
However on the phone with them they seemed less "with it" in answering my questions.
What really turned me away was their FCMSA intervention threshold went over as in nearly 90% in it's safety department.
No way did I want to deal with DOT looking at me more often because of other people's mistakes.
I will say this however...
I did catch Crete lying to me.
On these forums I saw Crete drivers saying that no cell phones are allowed, including with the use of bluetooth.
When I brought that up to my recruiter he said.. oh no we allow cell phones, it just needs to be with hands free bluetooth. "In fact we encourage it in case the company needs to get a hold of you while you're driving".
I get here and they have me sign paperwork saying I understand that any used of cell phones including with bluetooth is not allowed and I understand I can be terminated for it.
That really pissed me off.
It's not so much the whole cell phone thing... I don't like being played and lied to.
I don't care where I work or what I'm getting paid... if I'm lied to and disrespected.. I have no patience for that.
I did sign up as an OTR driver that can go to all 48, same at my last job but there they kept me north of Tennessee 95% of the time and probably 80% of my driving was from Chicago on eastward to the Northeast. If I wanted to run those lanes, I'd pick a position that offers that. I don't mind running some areas more often than others but I wanted to do OTR to NOT be in the same places all the darn time.
As long they keep me rolling, hold up their end and don't keep me stuck in certain areas especially the NE then I'll be fine.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
tow614 drives for South East Carriers and loves the company. Anyway, that's your decision and hope it works out good for you.
blairandgretchen and freightwipper Thank this. -
I always heard Crete was a good outfit,I guess they took the low road.
