Since you have the truck and license when you go across if you find and talk to the right people you can get a hot load up into the US guaranteed to make you a rich man and a legend.

Went to Laredo on Tuesday. The north bound immigration checkpoint currently lists 733 CDL’s revoked for life. There was a Marten truck in the impound cage.
Here’s how it goes down. A driver is approached in Laredo by someone who simply offers $100 bucks for a ride up to San Antonio. Driver thinks no problem. Then when they get to the checkpoint the driver just learned that he’s a human trafficker and it’s game over. They seize the truck, your CDL, and if you’re lucky they will probably allow you to hire a lawyer to negotiate a lower fine by several thousand dollars. -
Unless it has changed, a US driver cannot transport freight intra-Mexico.
In 1980 I remember reading a VP's report on the boarder crossing for DuPont shipments.
He described how as the first unit was un-hooking to wait for the interline driver and the dropped trailer was stripped of every removeable item in seconds by a locust like hoard who then wanted to sell everything back. Expect the same treatment when the relay returns
They went on to seek a relay partner with a fenced drop lot to eliminate buying back lights N' stuff on each trip.
In 41 years things have not improved and should be considered worse by far.
OP needs to treat his friend to a meal on the US side, it is probably easier for his friend to cross over and back -
Leave truck U.S. side (safe place) Walk across, meet friend, eat, drink Beer etc. Walk back across into U.S. when ready. Observe crossing hours before you cross. Some small crossings have short hours. Your passport will get you back home, no problem. One of funniest things I've seen in Mexicali is, thery have a China town there !
Diesel Dave Thanks this.
