I just bought a truck today and one if the last things the old owner said before I left was as soon as I turn cruise on the truck will be running at 550HP as opposed to 500 with it of. He also said having it on will cost me a mile per gallon?? I use cruise a lot.. a mile power gallon is a noticeable amount of fuel,, Anyone know anything about this? Thanks guys
Cruise control boost power from 500 to 550?

Do you mean a mile per gallon?
If not, I have no idea what a mile power gallon means.
Maybe he had the ECM modified to increase HP while in cruise mode? -

Alot of trucks are set up with split horsepower ratings.
For example 430/500 hp, means 430hp with the accelerator pedal, 500 hp with the cruise control on.Nuge31 Thanks this. -
Then I wonder why people don't actually read back what they are about to post, or turn the 'feature' off entirely when it hoses them so often.
Or proof read and add the word into the dictionary.
I guess I'm old school... very old school, in that I try to make sure what I write (post) is actually accurate and correct.
But then, I have the time to do so. (Actually, I take the time to do so.)
Unlike so many that take a small moment to scribble some text in a tablet or 'phone' between doing other things.
And you just said mpg... instead of miles power gallon or miles per gallon, which you took the time to write twice in the OP.
Sorry.
Just another rant from an old fart complaining about the practices of a newer generation.
But, I'm right. -
Yes some engines do have split power settings from the factory.
Yes it’s true that a good driver will get better fuel economy using their foot than using the cruise control. Especially in rolling terrain.
Every time you come up to a small hill the cruise will give it everything it’s got (more power means more fuel) to maintain your speed. Whereas a driver that is paying attention may just hold it steady and let the truck slow a little knowing that the truck will make it over anyhow, plus you might even let off of the fuel early knowing that you’ll get back all your speed on the downhill side.Bean Jr., Lepton1 and jgarciajr40 Thank this. -
I doubt the mpg savings is worth the hassle. Just simply drive slower.

Take it to appropriate dealer and have them tell you what all the parameters are set to then decide how you want it set up. It will cost you a little money but you need to know it's configured how you need it to be configured.
Lepton1 Thanks this.
