80 to 84 to 82 to 90, 80 doesn't connect to 82. Plenty of hills in CO, WY, UT, OR and WA...and make sure you bring snow chains. During winter a lot of those states require that you carry them, even if you don't intend on installing them, you must have them with you.

 

Be careful going through the canyons in utah, especially at night.

 

Chains, maybe fleetpride, tractor supply, truck/trailer dealership. From what ive heard if you want something you can use more than once avoid the truck stop.

Make sure to get triple rail, they go over both in the pair. Those singles can cut through and end up with all the weight on the unchained tire after the chains dig through the packed ice.

Truck stop snow chains are like 'bling', they serve the purpose of compliance and keep the super troopers off your butt if they check to see if you're carrying the right equipment, but they don't last all that well. @NH Guy has the right recommendation, if you actually intend on using them, the better quality chains are a must.


And as far as handling mountain grades, remember the age old saying, you can go down a mountain too slow a million times, but you usually only go down a mountain too fast just once.

 

Very sharp curves and very dark

 

Sudden tight curves, need to watch your lane position closely. Not much of a shoulder in places either.

I drove through in a 4 wheeler years back right after sunset, if i was going through again i would want to do it during daylight so atleast you get the scenery.
