I was getting truck aligned at shop the other day in Little Rock area, someone brought in a big motorhome, claiming he just bought it.
09, had dry rotted tires, claimed it had 49k miles, he paid 199k.

Is converting it back as easy as taking off the load bed and installing a fifth wheel hitch ?

Pretty much plus reinstalling lights, mudflaps, air lines (they were rerouted to the rear bumper) and cutting off the excess dovetail chassis they built. Probably a day or two work. I don't have anywhere to store the bed after I take it off, would have to sell it and probably lose 5-7k to move it fast and probably 2-3k to have the shop do all the work. Probably a week off work if no issues arise.
To sum it up, lose 10k and then invest 25-50k for a trailer or run power only and double my insurance. The math doesn't make sense to me currently so I added a cheap trailer to raise my current gross by 40-50%

Do you have room for a longer trailer?

how many cars can you haul now ?
You might be able to find a traffic lane that
    Has some better profit
Or maybe move some cars for dealers or caravana or something .
Or maybe Doing some short expedited vehicle moves?
I’ve had a couple of vehicles transported and the most frustrating part was never knowing where my car was or when it was going to be delivered and it took forever .

maybe allowing the customers to track your rig (and their car ) and moving them quickly would have some appeal in the market .
I know zero about car hauling .

When I was an o/o I always did power only , regional and local .

I habe a nephew that drives for a oversize heavy haul company , so he is becoming an expert in that , but I’ve never hauled cars . Almost Always dry van power only .

And for a couple of years I did refrigerated overseas containers with bananas , because we moved to a different state where the wife had a good job and in that area , hauling the bananas was the best money .

    I wish you the best.
Hopefully you can figure something out or pivot to a slightly different market .

Better idea IMO buying that trailer than having something custom built like you were talking about. At least that one would be easy to sell if needed and didn’t cost a ton up front. I still wouldn’t put anything too heavy on it though.

The market for cars is slow now. Your idea to modify that truck to run it that way allows to be more comfortable. Adding that trailer allows increase capacity. The way you used to run was down to a science as I recall. Changing anything now without knowing how long this current market will last at best is a gamble IMO. Do you have large note on your equipment? I know you bought it right if I recall?

On the other hand some places can’t get enough carriers to ship their freight. The depots can’t get people to haul small arms right now. I talked to lady said Broker outside the gate can not supply them. The amount of loads picking up and dropping off in large parts of the country is as large as I ever seen

I would sell it as is if you wanted to go back to a big trailer. Some RV hauler would pay top dollar for it as a haul and tow.

    Lite bug Thanks this.

Good deal, he has options. I was asking about the note because a lot of guys will stop or pick and choose when fuel prices are uncertain. I remember Flying J . I went to Texas and coming back no fuel a the J. Now a part of Pilot.
