    Hi all,

So back on June 6, an inspection officer stopped me for a regular check up. I was hauling a load from Brinson, GA to Detroit, MI.
The load was 43,500 lbs. I spread it the best I could between the two axles, 33k in the front, 32k in the back.

Everything was fine until I hit Tennessee.
An inspection officer stopped me in the Knoxville area for a regular check up. He could not find anything wrong, but he still gave me a "citation". He gave me the Driver/Vehicle Examination Report that states that the length from kingpin to center of the rear tandems was 42'2" when the legal allowance is 41'. Is he right? I feel if I had moved tandems closer it would've exceeded the max weight. I was fine in all other states, but apparently TN has this law or was he just being an ###**?

I got a card in the mail from General Sessions Court Criminal Division in State of TN vs me which states that the case has been reset for 8/15/2014. That's in 2 days!

What should I do? Please, help.

Pay the ticket and learn about the length restrictions in each state. That would be a violation in California, Florida, Idaho,Iowa,Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, north Carolina, new York, new Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode island, Tennessee, Vermont. Wisconsin, Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, Utah, and new Hampshire.

He is correct....however you would not have been legal for michigan either...

Michigan is now 41' from kingpin to center of rear axle...

All of this information is available in the front of a rand mcnally truck atlas...just make sure you have a new one because these restrictions do change from time to time...

It is important to know the bridge laws in every state you run in..some are different for state routes as well..

Btw...bridge law does not refer to actual bridges. It is what they call the distance between your kingpin and rear tandems.

Federal bridge law is 41ft (except California) from kingpin to center of rear tandem. If you really had 32k on the tandems, you could have very possibly put the tandems at 41ft and would have been fine. Most states save that violation as a last resort we can't get on anything else.

What that guy above me said...

Obviously 32k on the trailer was not "spreading it the best you could", and three or for more notches would have put your tandems probably close fo 34000, and shortened the length legal or close to legal. Or at least close enough to where he would not notice it or bother mentioning it.

I see some people roll down the road with them slid all the way back in MN and WI...I Just shake my head...might as well have a sign on the truck that says "I need a ticket"

There is no such thing as a fedearal bridge law....each state sets its own restrictions..

In tennessee for instance it is 41' from the kingpin to the center of the rear axle "group" or between tandems

    Other states vary

longhaul, sad to say best pay the fine, a quick Google search states TN axle spacing is 41 feet, being unaware of the law won't help... the price of education is sometimes high or cheap depending on whether or not you were put out of service... a 50' foot tape is cheap insurance... always set spacing for the shortest spacing in the state you are routed through... remember the dot guys are not like they used to be.... ( fix it and remember, now it's all about money not safety)....... sorry you had to learn this the hard way..... lecture over... hope you have better days... oh make sure you get it paid or arrangements made by the due date.. you don't want a suspension of your license... computers are fast getting it posted, but #### hard to get it removed .....

Some states say 43' to center of rear axle which is pretty much the same as Tennessee's 41' in the center.

A good rule of thumb is except for California and Michigan, the 41' to center of rear axle group works in the rest of the 46 states.
