Cleaning a truck or restocking food doesn't take long... Cleaning the truck should be done when being loaded or unloaded
Do any OTR drivers become a tourist on their days off?

There's plenty of time to get out and see and do stuff...
If you don't mind paying for a cab or walking you certainly can..redoctober83 Thanks this. -

There's a pretty cool collection of statues near the meth candy store. There's a neat historic district down there. We got some hand crafted ceramic coffee mugs too.
There's little treasures like this all over the country if we just take time to look. I need to take more time to stop and smell the roses now that I think about it.tucker, moloko, Quantitative Trucker and 1 other person Thank this. -

I am a Costco member and car rentals are pretty cheap with my membership. I've probably rented a car about a dozen times in the last 2 years to go spelunking.
I stopped spending money on motel rooms (honestly I sleep better in my own bed, in my truck) and spend the money on theme parks, ball games, car rentals and tattoos instead.tucker and redoctober83 Thank this. -
The question being asked shows that the poster is new. Which is just fine. If you run out of hours on your 70 hour clock and do not recap hours the next day, you need to be home.
When you drive using recap you never run out your 70 hour clock so you are never forced to sit. That doesn't mean we don't do tourist things. I have delivered to Disney World and spent the day on the rides. Going through Alabama on I-10 I stopped and toured the Battleship Alabama. Dayton Ohio and the Air Force Museum. Even taking in a movie is nice.
The trick to this is to work for a company that gives you pre plans. K and B out of South Sioux City, NE sucks at that. When you send them your empty call, you get back the message, no preplan exist for dispatch. So with them you are stuck. Hirschbach out of East Dubuque, IL always had a preplan for me. I knew how much time I would have off and could make plans for something to do.
I am heavy into Genealogy and would take time to run down cemetery records and such. Abe Lincoln being a cousin.
I have eaten some great Cajun food in LA, fresh peaches in Georgia, Lobster in Maine. Played poker a lot of places.
The trick is preplanning.
Now if only those massage parlors had bigger parking lots. -
Absolutely! But like mentioned above the trick is pre planning. When I was OTR, I got to check out the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville, Beale Street in Memphis, Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana, the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado, Billy the Kids gravesite in New Mexico, and Wall Drug in South Dakota... Can't forget about Wall Drug and the signs for their free ice water from 975,923 miles away! And that list just names a few of the many things I have done and that can be done. But, you must plan your trip accordingly, and make sure that if there isn't truck parking available, finding a place to park and then a taxi or Uber to and from your truck. You only live once, ENJOY IT!
