i'd prefer to run nights. I did an experiment once to see if i'd like it

lighter traffic, usually there are less scales open, and its a lot easier to find parking at the end of the shift!

I haven't done an all-night run since they passed that new 30 minute break law though

If you just want to do OTR with doubles you can team for any LTL company. Most of them have teams that do terminal hopping (NJ to Dallas; California to Chicago, things like that).

Fedex Ground is probably the easiest to get into. Get on craigslist and look for a fleet owner looking for someone to team for him.

Here's a typical example of what you can expect:

[h=2]DRIVERS/FEDEX GROUND (ORLANDO)[/h]FEDEX GROUND CONTRACTOR NEEDS TEAM DRIVERS
    ALL DROP AND HOOK
    TERMINAL TO TERMINAL NO TOUCH
    HOME WEEKLY
    2011 and 2012 TRUCKS
    .45 cents per mile

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY ALL INFORMATION WILL BE VERIFIED THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MUST HAVE 1 YEAR OVER THE ROAD TRACTOR TRAILER EXP. WITH IN THE LAST 3 YEARS
    GOOD DRIVING RECORD
    PASS CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK
DOUBLES ENDORSEMENT OR WILLING TO GET ONE
MUST READ, WRITE AND SPEAK ENGLISH FLUENTLY
RESPOND TO ABOVE EMAIL WITH LAST THREE (3)YEARS WORK HISTORY
    AND CONTACT INFORMATION

That's the first I found on my local craigslist.

Though I run team, I've done solo 'bag' runs with ODFL before and loved it. Run 500-650 miles a day and paid motel every night. Did it when the wife was off for a month. Pay rate only 56 cpm as a solo, instead of 66 as team, but happily knocked off 3200 miles in a week and home for a reset. I know guys who stay out 3 months at a time doing it - central dispatch LOVES them, always available to move freight.

    ###### - my sense of humor is on the blink. I'm laughing, but not sure if I should be.:)

Aaaaah, yes, we run all night - but isn't it nice and quiet when the solar powered bunnies are all cuddled up.

It's the last line that bothers me with this company. I don't understand why a person would work for .45 cpm, when they'd qualify for a company paying over .65 cpm.
Not being nasty, just don't understand.

They qualify, but it's not like they can just walk in and get hired like it's Werner. You know that.

Man, I "qualify" for UPSF. But I haven't seen an opening for their terminal here in over a year. Let alone an opening for linehaul.

YRC, Estes, ODFL, ABF, and UPSF freight all have OTR teams pulling doubles and triples. YRC and ABF not around by me but plenty of UPSF, ODFL and Estes trucks with sleepers. I wouldnt mind giving it a try for a year but since im at an end of the line terminal I never will, so it is what it is.

Yea I was surprised UPSF was hiring for a road driver at the small terminal im at, yet alone right onto a bid. Yea I spend more time on the dock, but its nothing like the Con-Way dock work that I used to do when I ran linehaul for them, UPSF dock is a LOT easier Im one of 8 road drivers at my barn. Some of these UPSF terminals Ive heard have a lot of a_holes but Im at a decent terminal, pretty much do the right thing, show up to work, do your job they leave you alone.

Now Oi! just keep checking... even if you get in as city, you might be able to switch to road if something comes up... yea you'll lose your senority but you'd be bottom road man anyways if you wait to apply. Also the starting pay is low, actually really low compared to other companies starting you out, but once you hit that third year it JUMPS up quite a bit

    Question,

Don't you have to be a nearly perfect individual to get on with these Elite Companies like Fed X and UPS and the others ?

Most of us drivers are out here suffering for very little cents per mile.

    i get only .36 :biggrin_25523:

What give when it comes to getting one of the good paying jobs ?
