I'am being told different things , I called Knight and they said the CDL through their training would be valid in all states .I called Illinois Secretary of State and they said you have to retake the test in Illinois.
Is this true ?
Is this just for Illinois ?
How does this work ?
Do you have to retake the CDL test in your State if you go to a company out of state

I'm not sure, would be interested in knowing as well, but I can't imagine it would be anything more than just the questions on the computer.

I've drove all 49 states on my oregon lic. This sounds like it might be a state thing, but never heard of it before. As long as you are a resident you should be o.k. Oregon dosn't give a rats ##### where I work as long as maintain a home inside the stae line. I don't know why Ill. would
-
I remember when working in a school as a instructor, certain states required students to retake the writtern portion of the driving test before getting a "home" state licence.
I can't remember which states these were, but there were some.
This from ill website
"Out of state applicants must take all CDL written tests to secure an Illinois CDL"
This meaning if you move from another state with a valid cdl you are required to retake all the writtern exams again. Says nothing about retaking driving portion so probally just the writtern. -
Thanks for the replies , yeah the lady from the Illinois Secretary of States office said if you are a Illinois resident you have to take the road and written tests in Illinois even if you obtained a CDL out of state.
She said it had to do with the license for bribes scandel.I will call back and make sure , I read that about only taking the written exam. -
I called back and they said if I (Illinois resident) was to go get my CDL out of state and come back to Illinois to drive for a company in Illinois , I would have to take the written and the road tests for my Illinois CDL drivers license.
If I stay with the out of state company then that would be fine.
Lol ,I bet if I call back again I get a different answer. -
yeah this sounds like a state issue.. i took my training in Indiana and live in Ohio.. i came back, paid the $6 license fee and they gave me my CDL.. I would imagine each state is different though
-
That is odd, they are supposed to honor them, that is why it is a commercial license. I got mine in NY over 20 years ago, when I moved to Arizona, I just had to get a new photo and pay for the license fee. No new tests or anything.

Illinois changed their law last year I believe.
If you live in another state and move to Illinois, you must take the written and driving test.
If you go to another state and get a license and you are an Illinois resident, you must take the tests and the driving part. -
You live in IL...you must take the CDL test there, and it will be valid in all states.
