How are the dollies handled in winter? At our terminal the dollies are left out in the snow forcing the drivers to clear them, deice them, pull them out of piles of snow.
I'm looking for best practices from other companies to give to our management.
Thanks.
Do you pull doubles/triples? How are dollies taken care of in winter?

I always struggled with them in winter. -
Yea always dealt with the brake drums froze up, etc. Got be a PITA!! Although strangely enough at FedEx the thing you struggled with the most was idiots leaving an out of service without red tagging it or writing it up...that and stealing the rubber grommets out of the glad hands.

I deliberately never carried a doubles endorsement.
Long time ago I recall a NY Thru way where they run full sized trailer doubles (48's) and a driver was cursing a dolly tandem that refused to come out of a snowbank... I figured nope, not for me.
So in this way I dealt with it by not dealing with it at all. I do tip my hat to those as they say in 16 tons song, strong back and a weak mind to do work like that.

Good luck giving any advice to them and they listening and/or caring. At FXF we complained about it and they could give a rats behind about our concerns.

I've worked for three companies that haul doubles. None of them have done anything with the dollies other than keep them in a spot in the yard to be snowed on.

I'm a yard jockey at LTL. I often set up doubles for linehaul drivers. Nothing really gets done about dollies...they are just left out in open. For some reason the breaks freeze up real quick. I don't know is it because the air freezes in the air chamber easily?
