    Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and I had a question about taking a DOT physical. I'm looking at a career change and was looking into maybe getting a CDL. I had a back problem about 20 years ago that resulted in surgery. It hasn't been an issue since. However, as you can imagine, I have about a six inch scar going down my lower back. Do you think a doctor would take one look at it and fail me even though it's ok?

    Thanks,
    Jim

No, there is a small agility test that is part of the Physical, such as touch your toes, stand on one leg etc... As long as you pass that your fine.

Don't do it. It's not what it used to be. Its over regulated, pay sucks for the amount of work you do. To many silly regulations that will effect you. You will be treated like a coolie and used.

Until the industry straightens out.....I recommend staying away.

Yes, you can pass a DOT physical.
What type trucking job do you want?
    Where is your location?
Do you plan to attend a trucking company school or a private cdl school?

If you have to take pain medication of any sort, go for the synthetic opioids which do not metabolize into morphine. Hydrocodone comes to mind. These will not pose a barrier to a DOT 5 panel either. Not to advocate anything, but back surgery and pain meds go hand in hand. At least you won't deal with the dreaded call from the MRO giving you the 3rd degree about why you're positive for opiates.

I have not seen the new physical forms, but I suspect there will be a question to you about all surgeries. Answer the question. The examiner will notate the scar and give you the card.

    Syosset Thanks this.

Thanks, but as I said, it's fine. Maybe I had a good doctor or something but I don't even take aspirin or advil or anything like that for it.

The scar will probably necessitate a prostate exam.

Doctor may ask you about the scar don't tell him you had back surgery otherwise he may fail you.Tell him something else.
