A federal annual DOT inspection performed within the last 90 days satisfies the California BIT inspection. I would stop at a T/A or Petro and get one done on your way back to Cali and fax it in to the CHP then call the next day to see if they got it and if they squared up your BIT requirement.
Every once in a while the CHP rolls up in one of my company's terminals in California wanting to look at maintenance records, specifically BIT. They are OK with annual DOT inspections performed within the last 90 days.

Don't let up on your aggressiveness on rates after Christmas or even New Year's doubleyellow. Now every year things can be different but the past couple of years van rates were solid up until mid Jan then things went to the crapper staying that way until late Feb or early March when they got hot again all the way into July. Since I said that this year may be different who knows lol. But, if you don't let up on pushing aggressively like that you will know when the markets are no longer supporting your demands. That's how you KNOW what a market is doing instead of guessing and getting lucky or just always scratching your head wondering. Keep your ledgers filled out and go back to refer to that info over time. That knowledge is your best asset - drivers not keeping a ledger and running off memory are practically blind to trends. Or only have vague ideas. Memories get fuzzy with time. I've seen it before someone remembered "this time last year" in a certain way then because of curiosity a check on my numbers from the past revealed something quite different from that memory.

I'll get 2 fresh annuals & and underhood truck wash just for peace of mind, but you can do your own 90-day inspections. CHP even has a form they want you to use: http://www.chp.ca.gov/publications/pdf/chp108.pdf
(if that link won't open in your pdf viewer try: http://jjassociates.us/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/CHP-Inspection-Forms.pdf )
My rough plan for the first 3 months of next year is to chase storms, popping up in places that may have been shut down for 2 or 3 days and that are now suffering from a backlog.
That's actually the opposite of my current strategy -- running away from storms. Mr. Market is not very efficient when it comes to pricing the effects of weather -- I've noticed no increase in rates for loads headed into developing storms. But such should be expected when your competition employs planners in climate controlled cubicals who have little motivation to keep drivers & equipment out of harm's way...Last edited: Dec 12, 2014
