I briefly considered working for a flatbed company , until I got to the part where I had to pay them a hefty percentage to use their trailer , and I had to pay for the tires.

I asked about it and they said it was because drivers would run over curbs with the trailer Tires instead of running over curbs with their tractor tires,
I mentioned that most places used garbage recaps on trailers and possibly that’s why trailer tires blew out frequently.

they insisted they the recaps on their flatbeds were the finest recaps in the universe and would never blow out unless the driver abused them .

F that, if I gotta pay for the tires and all the maintaining, plus pay a percentage off the top for the trailer , would would I not just buy my own trailer ???

Surely doesn't sound like a company anyone would want to lease to or work for.

When you turned in your trailer did you together with a company representative do a full inspection and get a written report ?

Just came across this thread, and I can say from firsthand experience — you’re not wrong.

I leased a brand-new flatbed trailer through Mercer, hauled under their authority for years, made consistent payments, and was near the end of the lease when they suddenly terminated my trucking contract (based on a bogus accusation). Because the trailer lease was tied to weekly settlements, they refused to accept further payments — then repossessed the trailer and sued me anyway for the full trailer value plus over $60,000 in legal fees.

They even filed a judgment abstract in Texas using a handwritten number that was never awarded by any court. Total abuse of the legal system.

I’ve filed suit. I’m not the only one. If this has happened to you — or something even close — I’d really like to compare notes.
