The really nice thing about a rural area is that there are a lot less "entrepreneurs" roaming about looking to steal other people's stuff.

Talk to any of the companies that are around you that either have trucks or parking that would work for a trailer. Local farms, especially if they are your near neighbors, are likely to say "Sure, put it over there." It doesn't have to be a paved lot. Just hard enough to hold the trailer. It'd look good next to that combine.

And those relationships can come in handy when hubby needs to find another driving job.

I worked at an ltl and they had trailers broken into and stuff stolen. The theives used liquid nitrogen to freeze the abloy locks and then hit them with a hammer. They never told us what was stolen.

There is no locking mechanism that can stand up to liquid nitrogen and a hard lick with a big hammer. This is how crooks are defeating (the club) and the other things you see advertised. A club can be defeated in about 10 seconds. However I also know of a guy that almost lost his leg because he spilled liquid nitrogen on his leg. It is extremely dangerous to have near you. Liquid nitrogen BOILS at -320 F.

You can buy a lock specially made to keep this from happening but honestly, most people wont touch your trailer unless they happen to know there is VALUABLE items in it and are also a THIEF. I drop flat beds all the time fully loaded and never touched.

Rule #1 of theft deterrence: Make your #### harder to steal than the sucker next to you.

In a pinch, ya could run a big ol chain through the inside dual and around the axle with a QUALITY lock... Be noisey tryin to get that off and the wheels aint gonna turn with it on...

Oh, Ive also heard them cheaper kingpin locks break off easy by hittin em with the 5th wheel... Just somethin ta keep in mind. Never messed with em myself... Usually have the pit gaurd here and if that dont work, a keen eye and good ol Smith and Wesson usually culls the heard! Lol

If your husband is a new driver, it is best for him to tell his manager his home circumstances, and see what the company suggests.

As many others have stated, nothing will stop a competent thief from taking a trailer or it's cargo.

Ideally you want a well-lit, fenced, gated facility with video monitoring that your company has agreed is a good place to drop a trailer.

As a company driver, your husband's concern should be finding a place or method for dropping his trailer that eliminates his liability for the equipment and load. And you should get that in writing from the company, if possible.

If you drop it loaded trailer for a repower or drop and hook another trailer, make sure to pass responsibility for that load to whoever told you to drop it. Otherwise just never drop a loaded trailer unless at a shop. Just don't do it. Drop empty trailers wherever you want, that's what insurance is for but don't drop a loaded one except at the delivery.
