We actually for a short time relatively access to what was left of that laudanum, it was focusing on what we might call nausea due to bad food etc of that time. Co-dine would be the closest equivalent. We used some as kids now and then. A spoonful takes care not only the gut problem but whatever chaos in the mind as well. I can totally understand why people would want to gulp the stuff.
If I learned anything from my constant trips into Colonial History around the midatlantic especially the sea frigates and such, people did not age very much in those days I think they grew to be about 5-3 or so and aged to 35 roughly with weights probably in the 130 range. Im 6 foot and huge compared to them and had to bend over in some of the older ships I could not do well in them below decks.
If you want battlefield medicine that is somewhat NOT hollywood crap and somewhat true to detail, pick Master and Commander where some of the people get blasted in battle and taken to the Orlop deck for medical care. What little there is of it.
When the grandparents finally died and we disposed of the house, one closet which I never was allowed into as a child (For very good reason...) was stuffed full of alcohol and other goodies. Some of which probably exceeded 100 years old to date.
Ive always wondered about that a little bit now and then when you consider what people might pay for stuff like that in that part of being that type of collecting. (*Its not for us, we disposed of it because of a belief that old spirits would really hurt someone if consumed... although we managed to store a few in our basement, which no one will touch.)
It's not a easy life back then and people took care of what needed to be taken care of to get by. But when you have 67000 people dead and probably several times that addicted to where they need rescue via Narcan or some other Anti OD drugs (That is a good thing...) it's necessary to get them cleaned up so they can contribute to society. It is literally a rot within our workforce.
Without getting political, our rivals (Enemies...) must be laughing their butts off so hard when they look upon the USA.
Drugs and new drivers... Is it really THAT bad?

Funny thing, here in Canada some companies do drug testing but look for drugs such as cocaine, MDMA, meth etc. But nobody even bats an eye for THC consumption. When I went for an interview at GFS, they asked me if I was ok doing a hair follicle drug test that DOES NOT test for THC. I later found out that most of their drivers are pot heads. Same story at many other companies, they test for hard drugs but not THC. With weed becoming legal this year nation wide in Canada, I wonder what will change. Even the Canadians that run to the US only get drug tested once per year. I know many truckers that quit for 2 months, do the test and continue being addicts for the rest of the year. I probably know 10+ local drivers that smoke pot on a daily basis or do heroin. I'd even go as far as saying 90% of local companies have no drug testing regimine. But if you get into an accident you can get ####ed really hard.

A pot addict? That's kind of funny, pre-cdl I would consume said product. Stopped and continued at free will. Now nicotine and caffeine on the other hand very much addictive.

Marijuana only forms mental addiction for the very mentally weak and people that abuse it. Try consuming cigarettes occasionally. Good luck with that.

Simply put that's why I stopped before I got my cdl and have peed clean since. I have never failed a drug test anywhere. I don't agree with the law as it stands, but if I want to survive in trucking I have to follow the law, however unreasonable it may be. I also hate how alcohol gets a free pass. Apartently one of our company drivers got behind the wheel of a rig completely drunk. Story goes he hit a cow and dragged it several miles and my boss paid for a lawyer to get this guy out of the mess he got himself into. The farm also sued for restitution for the loss of the animal. Don't know if that story is true but it's absurd.

Some people are more susceptible to addiction, some less. You are probably on the 'less' side if you were able to smoke regularly for more than a couple weeks, then quit easily.
I envy you that. I smoked cigarettes for 22 years before I quit, after trying many times. I smoked MJ for 2 years, then quit with zero difficulty the first time I tried.Canadianhauler21 Thanks this. -
I smoked one or 2 cigarettes in my youth. Never got addicted. The logic part of my brain says "what's the ####ing point?"
