electronic log question about off duty

    Does logging off duty help save some of my 14 hr/ or 70 ? Example.. come in at 7am, on duty for 30 minutes.. i drive from 730 until 1230. I arrive at shipper and they say 3-4 hour load time. Ill go off duty and shop at local mall.....after i.get loaded at 430pm, would i.still have to obey the 14 hr rule and.stop 900pm after my 14 is up ?

    yep. you can't stop the clock.

    but it doesn't eat up your 70.

    Off duty does not help save your 14 hour clock. Nothing stops that (except 8 hours of continuous sleeper time, but that's part of the split sleeper exception so a bit beyond beginner HOS.) Your 70 only counts lines 3 and 4, so off-duty doesn't "save" some time of your 70, it simply doesn't count for it. And yes, by your example you still need to stop at 2100 and take a 10 hour break.

    BTW, this doesn't pertain strictly to electronic logs, but logging in general.

    It still runs against your 14 but you will save hours on your 70!

    Im NEVER IN THE SLEEPER..ARIVE ANY WHERE I WAIT 2 MINS THEN WAM IM IN THE SLEEPER....PERIOD...STOPS 70HR..CANT STO14HR CLOCK..THOUGHT I WOULD HAT E LOGS.BUT I DONT..IT CAN SCREW U TO..LIKE WHEN U WANT TO GO HM LOL

    34-Hour Restart Changes:
    FMCSA did retain the portion of the proposed rulemaking that restricts the use of the 34-hour restart provision to one time a week. But it adjusted the parameters from the proposed rulemaking somewhat. The proposed rulemaking required truckers to include two consecutive 12 midnight to 6 a.m. rest periods. The final rule narrows the rest window by two hours, requiring the two nights include 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. periods.

    Breaks:
    The new rule also states that truck drivers cannot drive after working eight hours without first taking a break of at least 30 minutes. Drivers can take the 30-minute break whenever they need rest during the eight-hour window.

    Penalties:
    Companies and drivers that commit egregious violations of the rule could face the maximum penalties for each offense. Trucking companies that allow drivers to exceed the 11-hour driving limit by 3 or more hours could be fined $11,000 per offense, and the drivers themselves could face civil penalties of up to $2,750 for each offense.

    Compliance Dates: On July 1, 2013, the 34-hour restart change and the rest break rule will come into effect.

    FMCSA Final Rule

    Forget about the 14hr rule. It is now going to be 13.5hr rule on July 1, And you can not work more then 8hrs without a 30min break.:biggrin_2551:

    Like every other poster said,it does eat up your 14 but stops the 70 hr rule.The second you start your day is when the 14 hr clock starts.

    You need some on duty time at a shipper. Logging the entire time as off duty will raise a red flag.

    I love it that a bunch of desk jockeys can dictate how many hours I can work but go home when they get the sniffles
