I've seen quite a few Fe -male drivers out there , the ratio is smaller than how many men drive trucks. You sound determined and willing to make your situation better. It wouldn't be dangerous no one would try and hurt you if that's your concern. I think you'd make it as a driver.

Not necessarily “Essential Information” as something to think about....

If you’re out there as a trainee and trying to be a productive member of society, I applaud you. But maybe we can dispense with wearing the “ghetto hoodie” while driving and interacting with others. Observed this in a Stevens Transport trainee and was surprised the “Larry the Cable Guy” looking trainer would tolerate this dress code.

For starters, this is no where near a look we need to be putting forth to the public. But otherwise it's dangerous and I'm out here having to share the road with a new driver, with little to no experience who hobbles himself further with blinders as if he didn't have enough working against him as it is. That's how it affects me!

Reduced peripheral vision. You would fail the peripheral vision test part of the CDL physical if you tried it while wearing a hoodie pulled all the way up and forward in ghetto style.

Retiring from the military in the next year or so and want to get into the trucking business.

No criminal charges ever, no dui’s and one ticket 10 years ago for speeding.

    What’s my best option?

    Thanks in advance!

You have many options. Start out by telling us what city and state you will be living in after getting out of the military.

When you do, tag Chinatown, and they can probably point you at a couple companies.

One big thing to remember. As a vet, you can use your GI benefits to get your CDL initial training for free as an apprenticeship program. Any competent CDL school will know this.

Another thing to remember. If you choose to get your CDL school at a company that is not also a trucking company, make absolutely certain that at least a few big companies will accept graduates from that school. Call the trucking companies, dont trust the school.

The easy way to go is having a CDL already in your pocket. Go see the transportation department and find out if there is a way you could get or what it takes to get a military CDL. Then when your out all you have to do is take the written part of the state CDL. Once that's out of the way you can pick your school to meet your needs. You can get your CDL at school and most do, however, it's to your advantage to already have one. IMHO the community college is the best way if you're near a school that has a program. Stay away from the schools that pay your way and give you a job when done. You can guess that type of school is on the bottom but does offer advantages that others do not. So I guess you have to give up one thing to gain another. But you have an advantage that most do not have. You can use the military for gain once in awhile. Once you pick a school you have time to pick the company you'll want to work for. Now is the time to get your CDL and get into school. Good luck and stay in touch.
