Hello fellow truckers, I am looking to do some short term work in the United States. I currently work in London, England I hold a (EC) license which means "C" is for over 16000 kg gvm and "E" is for articulated trucks.
The license was obtained in South Africa which is much cheaper than getting one in the UK where it costs about $6000.00 and SA standards are very high indeed.
Can anybody advise me how this translates into licensing in the USA and can I drive with it as is or will I have to convert it to a USA license before I can work in the USA.
You comments and advice will be much appreciated, thank you and drive safely.

You have to take the US CDL test no matter what. Plus get into a company trainer program unless some small company definitely want´s you to work with them and HazMats etc etc... no sense in going short term IMO..you either movbe over and stay or you don´t.
Think about them benefits too you don´t build up in short term working hopping from continent to continent...
Now howabout them slippery driving courses in South Africa ? -
you may want to message Etosha... she is from South Africa and drives cdl's in Canada
dont know where she first got her license - but maybe a good source of info.
as for the "naturalized citizen faction" here - welcome
and hope you find some enjoyment out of this hodgepodge of a country! -
There are many opportunities in Canada for you to come over and drive for a work term. Canada welcomes drivers from other countries and doesn't make them go for WEEKS with trainers. They just have to have a road test. Check into it if you're interested.

Thank you Mickey fin, you cleared that one up for me, do you now work in the USA?. I didn't expect a reply from Finland.
I used to have a favorite trout fly called the Mickey fin which worked very well in cold weather.
Thanks and drive safely as always.
