Been a while but I've gone by open scales several times when the ramps were backed up. I'm not sitting on the shoulder of the road waiting to get hit. Never been chased down. Done this a few times at Banning which is usually pretty good about changing the sign but sometimes they let them get out on the road.
Missed one in Nebraska once that was in a real funky interchange out in podunkville. I saw the sign but didn't see the scale until I was going by. I just kept going. Can't remember exactly where it was just remember the pucker factor wondering whether I was gonna get ran down.
Ever blow by a Weigh Station when it was open?

I have blown the weigh station on I-59 south out of Mississippi many times as well as going east on I-10 out of Louisiana into Texas,,
I have blown Banning several times too with OD loads,, -
Half dozen or so times over the years. Missed the Mississippi I-55 north scale just south of Memphis a few times. It's clearly marked and no reason other than not paying attention. Nobody came after me.
I-29 south coming into South Dakota from North Dakota is a 24/7 scale. However they have a road construction sigh prior to the scale house that says "SCALE OPEN" half the time the sign doesn't work or gets blown sideways as it's portable. I think someone nailed the permanent sign. I go through there every Thursday morning and every time I'm weighing a truck or two goes by. The scale guys give those drivers the benefit of the doubt I guess. I run from Texas up to Fargo every week and I-29 north of Sioux Falls and I-90 is old skool truckin. Lots of good ol boys and Canadians up there willing to help a fellow driver out. -
Yea several times in different states been lucky so far

Hasn't every trucker blown by a set of scales before?
Once, after midnight coming towards the New Mexico scales coming east on I-10 3 of us produce haulers had made up our mind we would not be stopping. Back about 3 to 5 miles before we reached the scales we caught up with several trucks. So we slowed down and kind of mixed our selves with in them and when we got to the scales we did not turn in. And during this time we did not talk on our CBs, it was silence CB for us until we hit Texas.
A Willy Shaw truck was behind me. And of course I did not turn in, and he did not turn in either he just kept following me. The Willy Shaw driver hit his CB saying something like this. Oh God, I did not turn in at the scales, what do I do, I dont want to get fired on my 1st trip?
Someone answered him saying, Pull over and walk across to the scale house.
By that time we had already passed the scale exit and I saw him pull over back behind me. I suppose he had an enjoyable nighttime constitutional walk back to the scale house.
At such a time its always nice for the scale house to be busy with several trucks coming through, it keeps them from looking out to see if any truck are trying to sneak by in the dark. One thing we did not do is turn our lights off, in any such situation I would leave the light on, that will mean one less ticket if caught.
Some said they had never seen trucks chased down for running a set of scales.
I remember seeing a car with light on top flashing pullout chasing a trucks down 3 at the Banning scales on the west side. And once entering Arizona from California on I-10 I saw a truck get run down by a car with flashing lights on top. I feel sure those trucks probably had to pay a very heavy fine.Giggles the Original Thanks this. -
We're on e logs now, so no, not anymore.
Sometimes the Ringgold i75s scale or Knox i40w scale get too backed up and if I don't feel like waiting..
Well.. Yea. -
The guy who taught me to drive ( my uncle) made me learn to read every single road sign , bill-board , mile marker , road number on an over-pass.....everything....he said once you get into the habit of doing that , you'll very rarely get lost , very raely get caught with your pants down ( meaning weigh stations , low bridge warnings , etc) , and also it helps to keep you alert and awake....served me well for a long , long time and still does.
Dino soar, snowlauncher, scottlav46 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Blew the one on the 20 eastbound heading into Georgia this morning, let a long line of cars in wouldn't let me back over, watched my mirrors for 2 miles nobody came. It's my own fault though for thinking those speedway racers would let me back over never again.
-
Blew but it a few times on purpose and noone came after me. Then in kansas i blew by one and the trooper chased me down. I explained to him that my prepass wasnt working and i relied on that. So he did a level 2 inspection with no violations and then let me go. Nice cop.
I have never done it since then.
