There isn't a shortage of drivers. There is a shortage of professional drivers.

That's more of a reflection poor training & education on the companies/industries part. No one starts with 10yrs experience in anything, hobby, job, etc. If they(OTR mainly) actually paid better and retained people, it would become more filled with "professionals" and the government would probably be less up everyones rear end.

I agree with you to a certain extent. When I say "professional" I'm talking about drivers as a whole. A guy shouldn't have to be trained to wear clean clothes, shower on a regular basis and not litter the highway with piss bottles, to name a few.

Professional drivers don't rely on a company to make them a professional. Those with a burning desire to better themselves and to succeed will find a way to hone their skills and learn what is necessary to make them a professional. There are many steering wheel holders, but much fewer professional drivers. It isn't the responsibility of the companies or government to make a driver a professional. It is up to the driver. Most people only want to show up to collect their paycheck. The professional want to do his best just for the satisfaction that he knows that he has done the best of his ability. That doesn't mean that money isn't important to the professional, it is more about his attitude. A professional seeks to learn about his industry and new regulations that affect his career. The professional will always rise to the top and will be the high earner. The steering wheel holder will complain about the company, the pay and everything else. The professional will take responsibility for his mistakes while the whiner will blame everyone else for his shorcomings.

Past criminal history isn't an excuse; many companies hire ex-cons with long rap sheets. Many hire guys just released from prison.

Sad really. ##### and complain about the worse drivers. Everyone considers themselves above others. Everyone blames everyone else. Yet? Where are all the true professionals? The good drivers? Not making a change thats for sure. Never seen a few good drivers ever call out a bad driver in their face and made to park in the proper place. Never seen a group of good drivers forcing some bad driver to pick up his trash he just threw out. Don't see a group of Professional drivers ever get together and try to make the job worthy of the respect and wages a true profession deserves. Ya listen to them ##### and moan about todays trucking in the truck stop and when you follow them out they are parked at the fuel island in a half empty parking lot. Watch them throw trash out of their trucks onto the ground when a trash can is 2 feet away. A true scumbag would stand out in a crowd of professionals but they don't because its allowed by the Professionals.

"Many hire guys just released from prison."

People deserve a second chance. Based on individual circumstances.
