I would buy that truck and immediately set it on fire. Those 5.4 3 valves are horrendous motors that I wouldn’t even give to my worst enemy.

    bzinger Thanks this.

Well I've done considerable research on the subject and it turns out most failures are from owners that go by the oil monitor resulting in sludged up oil ports , those that do 3 to 5k drains on high quality oil report few issues .

Do some codes still require X amount of drive cycles before the MIL goes out?

Me personally I would run valva
Me personally I would run valvoline full synthetic motor oil or Ford synthetic. Gm Mobil 1. No more than 3500 miles between oil changes. Or gm ac Delco which is made by Mobil 1.

BigR, Oxbow and bzinger Thank this.

That and broken spark plugs were another big issue, but there are several tools out there to extract them any more. I enjoy watching this guy and learn a lot from his diagnostic ability.

Forgive me for butting in on the thread, but on the subject of pickups:

I have owned the following pickups:

    73 Gmc 3/4 ton
    78 Gmc 3/4 ton
    80 Chev 1 ton
    82 Chev 1 ton
    85 Gmc 1 ton
    95 Powerstroke 1 ton
    04 Powerstroke 1 ton
    05 Powerstroke 1 ton
    05 Excursion
    Currently own in the business:
    08 F 350 with 390k
    11 F 350 with 280k
    15 F 350 with 120k (service truck)
    16 F 350 with 200k
    22 F 350 with 25k
    Wife's 18 F 150 with 50k

I'm not going to defend the automakers in regard to price, but we do so much more with pickups now than we ever would dream of in the 70s or 80s. We routinely gross around 36000 pulling a gooseneck with small equipment. We run throughout the winter in sub-zero temps and never have any issues starting. The entire pickups hold up so much better than the cherished square bodies, pull more, and better mpgs. All the new electronics have been reasonably trouble free. Have never had to replace a transmission or rear end. Have only had to go into an engine twice.

All this to say, I loved the old pickups as much as anybody, but they don't hold a candle to the newer ones for most everything,. Yes, if you had an issue you stood a far better chance of being able to cobble it together and get it home with the old ones, but reliability in my experience was no better, and we work them so much more now than we did then.

Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

I run amzoil and mobil 1 in every engine I own and don't run extended drains , I learned out of tech school in the early 80s as an auto tech the results of long drain intervals.
My tech instructor would have us tear down neglected engines to drive home the point of factory recommended drain intervals and holds true today .
Sell low cost of ownership and get the component to the end of warranty.

dwells40, IH9300SBA and Oxbow Thank this.
