I ALWAYS try to plan so I am in the shop while taking a 10 or 34. Less stressful that way.

Hey Chris, how likely would you be to recommend Magnum. My current company is chasing the spot market and I see trouble looming. I see tons of Magnum up on I-94 which is where I like to run, what say you?

Quality reefer outfit in my opinion. They run mostly 579’s but there’s a handful of Cascadia’s in the fleet. Well maintained equipment. Disk brakes on both trucks and trailers. They only run 65 but that didn’t matter to me. They avoid all the real nasty areas. They don’t go north of Jersey or anywhere near California. They also avoid meat and produce loads. A lot of French fries, frozen pizzas, and egg products. It’s reefer freight so you’ll have to deal with all those lovely food warehouses when you deliver, although they have a pretty solid customer base for outbound freight. Never had an issue with them paying out detention or layover when requested. Only left because I live in no man’s land in their running lanes so it was hard for them to get me home.

Also forgot to mention that the majority of the time, they’ll offer you a few different runs when coming out of Minnesota or ND, or you can call before you get to that area and see what they have available. Definitely a driver friendly atmosphere. Everyone I talked to in the office was more than happy to help. They have their issues and quirks but no company is perfect.

They run to Washington and Oregon on occasion too, and those were my favorite runs. They move a lot of freight to and from North Carolina. That’s probably their #1 lane. If you want to see a bunch of I-94, Magnum’s gotcha covered.

My all time favorite run there though was the beer load from Ft Collins to Fargo. That drive up US-85 is beautiful at any time of year, and there’s little traffic to deal with.

    Okay, I’ll stop rambling.

Has anyone heard anything about being able to make changes to insurance for the coming year? I haven’t seen anything yet.

Slept in Montezuma, KS last night. Very quiet spot and only a few trucks here. I have to pick up at McKinley paper which I’m not a fan of, so after I drop in Los Lunas this afternoon, I’ll start heading in that direction. It goes to Lebanon, IN but with me running on recaps and needing to be home by Wednesday, I’m unsure if they want me just to take it home, or split it somewhere or swap with another driver.

I’ve been driving for 2.5 years but I still have noob questions like this one.

If you’re hauling a heavy load, will putting more weight on the drives vs the tandems enable the truck to pull better, or does it really matter?

I would say that it won’t matter. The truck has to move the total weight.
