That's one of the top ten tickets written out here in Wyoming every month. I never leave that space blank, and in a situation like you're describing, I'll use the info from the cancelled load if I have it since the cancellation itself explains why I'm bobtailing or deadheading in the other direction, or if I've already been given the information for the next load I'll put that in there since I'm being dispatched toward that pickup. You could also use something like "Non-Revenue Tractor Move" or "Equipment Reposition" just to have something written down.

I’ve been inspected both BT and loaded. I was once inspected in KY, and 2x in VA within 2 weeks! KY and 1st time in VA I was loaded. 2nd time in VA I was BT to get a load. I was pulled and inspected on my way home while running local BT. None of these times was anything said about having or not having info in the load tab. Learn something new everyday, I guess. At least I wasn’t cited for it today.

What if you’re on PC? I do write in the PC explanation box what I’m doing, but have not ever put anything in the load tab. There are times when I PC 2 hours to go home or back to the terminal BT.

Then just leave the load info from the previous load on there. They don’t know if the info is right or wrong. They do know if the blank is empty.

Interesting issue. I too only put info there when I’m actually under load as I don’t yet have the BOL number to record for said load. Will be interesting to see if Safety would be successful getting it reversed after the fact or to learn what DOT wants us to fill those fields with when not under load.

So far, safety is saying I shouldn’t have to put anything there, but I haven’t faxed the form yet. I will get it to them when I get to the terminal later today. They seemed just as flummoxed as I was. I get having an actual load there, but an mty or bt move?

    MidWest_MacDaddy Thanks this.

For the most part, DOT wants that field filled in no matter what. In their thinking, commercial vehicles don't operate without some commercial purpose, nor should they, and thus they need to state that purpose in order to account for their presence on the roadway. As a driver, it's probably safer just to write something, anything in that box whether you're under load or not, using PC, whatever.

If I don't have a trip number yet, I put "empty" or "empty - trip number not available yet". Sometimes dispatch will tell me to start in the direction of where the next load is likely to come from, but either they don't have a load, or the next load is being processed and they haven't been given the trip number until all the paperwork is completed, but they need me to get started towards the customer so once it's done, I'll be close and ready.

Left the house this morning with my empty van and headed to Morrison TN for some tires going up to Woodridge IL to deliver tomorrow. Nothing major to report today, other than snow is cold.

I almost had a @Long FLD trailer in Morrison, but it cleared my tires barely. Slow day in the news world.
