Living in FL, I have adjusted my thinking about pay cycles. I think of my pay per month rather than per week, mostly because my bills come in monthly. That way, if I have a crappy week, or a no pay week for hometime, it is sorta averaged in with the rest of the month, and as long as my month is acceptable, then it doesn't affect me too much. Since I live in FL, I have worked for a fair number of places that have had issues booking freight to get me home and to get me moving again after hometime so I learned to be flexible with hometime. Sometimes I get home earlier than I expect, but leave back out earlier. If there is something that is date specific (like a Graduation, a wedding, or a medical procedure) I put in for vacation time, with a little extra time before the event just to be safe.

But isn’t that true of any company?
Meaning if you live outside their lanes then occasionally things get difficult or doesn’t run perfectly simply because of fewer load options available to them and then to the Driver?
I’m not saying it doesn’t suck but just the reality of being dispatched outside their normal lanes?
I live off the beaten path too and sometimes it requires flexibility. And I’d rather be home a day early, and it’s happened, than a day late. -
I too look at it monthly instead of weekly and have money in the account to float as needed should a few light weeks hit in the same month.
Personally, I’d prefer to get paid every two weeks instead of weekly as it would smooth out the ebb and flow of the weekly miles.
But either way, at the end of the year my taxable gross is what it is no matter how it hits the bank. -

Sounds like the Queen song, “another one bites the dust”. OTR works fine if you live in a lane where you can get home enough to keep the family happy but still make a living. But out of route will cost you every time.

You are short a couple days that is true, very true. I’m with you in that and that is not preferred but you are home for those extra days off so enjoy the time home.
Other drivers at other companies might have that much down time waiting for planners to get their stuff together and waiting for loads while OTR. True it’s not bunched up in two straight days but it all adds up.
But maybe I’m a glass half full kind of guy… (my wife would laugh that I just said that… lol)Last edited: Dec 31, 2021

Got a question about my APU. Should it be charging my batteries as it runs?
The issue I’m still hitting is when I go to boil water in my microwave I get some “low voltage” warning from my truck. I can understand if I have a heavy draw on the batteries by running a microwave for 7 minutes but I also get the same warning, maybe a bit later, if I run the microwave with the APU running.
Just doesn’t seem right. I would assume the APU should power a medium sized microwave. So I thought I’d toss it out to those that might have a better understanding of what the APU does or doesn’t do.
