If you live in Michigan you don't have to settle for this kind of garbage company. There are established companies that run nice equipment and don't micromanage you all while paying very decent wages on W2.

The problem with this idea of trating a 1099 as a W2 will get you in trouble, so file your taxes as a 1099 and PAY what you owe. Then file a complain agaisnt the company with both the state of Michigan and the IRS. Let these places deal with the issues, the IRS will go and investigate the owners, If they find you were an employee, then you will get the money back. or should.
What do you mean health insurance?
If this was provided by them, you are an employee, even if you pay. This is where a good EA can help you.

Unless you made quarterly payments to the irs you are going to owe a LOT of money. Also unless your employer or you have occupational injury insurance you will be screwed if you get hurt. If i were you i would find a job where you have coverage

Hell just give the name of this euro trash and address and company name and i will be honored to turn this ####### in for you , and hope he gets his ### deported

See how much SS tax you paid, the employer should pay half, go after it after you leave. The IRS will give them a education and it will either run them out of business or make them play by the rules.

I also work on 1099 in MI and drive a Volvo truck. Yes, doing 1099 is illegal, however nobody would hire me without experience and without 160 hours of school. I gross about 5k per month. I leave Monday mornings and come back every Friday night. I don't go to PA, NJ and NYC. My CDL cost me less than 1k. I think its a better alternative than owing 5k for a 160 hours school, be on the road for 3 weeks at a time and drive 1500 per week. After one year I can go and work a better place on W2
