I got a piece of junk old truck that I am driving. The fifth wheel slide is pretty dry and rusted up and will sometimes not move when I try to adjust it. I have to hammer the dogs back that lock into the slide to get them to lock/unlock. What is a good lubricant to keep things moving smoother? Will some WD40 work? Or should I find some grease similar for what we use to lubricate the top of the fifth wheel? Also, when is the best time to slide the fifth wheel? Landing gear up or down when the trailer is connected?

Sometimes with those dirty, rusty ones, lower the landing gear enough to take some weight off the fifth wheel. Sometimes WD-40 helps.

Trailer connected, landing gear down and just touching.
    Then drop the airbags.
Sliding should be easy from there.

    What is a good lubricant?
WD40 might be good to get things moving, but that 5th wheel grease will keep it that way.

    road_runner and Chinatown Thank this.

To get it moving, don't even bother with WD40... get some PB Blaster. And then use the 5th wheel lube.

If the pins won't slide out easily, perhaps the slide has been used so much that it has worn down the metal. raise the height by slipping pieces of metal under the fifth wheel slide and weld the metal to the plate that is attached to the frame. This will let the slides open up easier as they will not be binding anymore. (If you have a holland slide where the air cylinder is just in front of the 5th wheel and it pushes the locking pieces outward to unload the slides.) For lubrication of the slides, I have used hub oil, wd-40, and just about anything else you can name, thought the gear oil worked good, Chainsaw bar oil wasn't too bad, sometimes it depends on how dusty and dirty the environment is where you run.

I pull both pups and long boxes. I move it towards the back for clearance on the landing gear, and then I need to move it forward to get a bit more weight on both my axles here in the winter time. I rarely screw with it in the summer time.

Neither can I. I've moved the 5th wheel one time in nearly a year.
