Well there's definetely no "one size fits all" answer. I have heard of people doing fine with a new truck payment when there isn't anything else to pay for. Then there's guys like me that choose to drive older equipment to go home more often. And it depends on what kind of trailer you want to pull and if you plan on having your own or are looking for company trailer to pull.

My advice is: first figure out what you are going to do with the truck. And then spec the truck to be profitable under that scenario. Buying the truck first means you get a les than ideal truck for your application. Need to know what you are hauling in order to know what rears to spec, as an example.

Don't assume just because you have a truck you can sign on anywhere you want.
