If I was to do 1/mile all day....I'm getting a old school detroit 60, that is tried, tested & true. Mininal maintenance, and ZERO TRUCK NOTE.
They can blame "cheap freight" all day, but its all in how you arrange your ducklings. Some people shoot themselves even before they aim...LOL

What about finding something on the way that paid the same but half of the miles would be empty? What am I missing? If it's say 800 miles home and you find a load that has 400 miles of deadhead but it still pays the same as the cheap load would it not be better to deadhead 400 miles empty? I'm just confused about "cheap frieght" that's being hauled and then wondering why it's cheap. Again I'm trying to learn something but I guess I'm not getting it.

Yeah 92 CPM definitely sucks. And I wish I could have gotten a better rate coming in. 970 miles for $2800. That's close to $2.90/mi. Brokers aren't paying more than that right now. There are trucks sitting everywhere. But I need next week off. Then after that I'll be out 10 weeks. I might look at partials and try to make those work. We'll see.

I'm glad I read this thread. It reminds me of buying my first truck and trailer 10 years ago. Bought a used 379 and a reefer. Thinking back, wonder how I did it sometimes. Within 7 months fuel went to $5.00 a gallon. Had good customers to work for and made it thru. Still running the same truck today. Got dedicated accounts now. Sure hope they don't go away. I would hate to have to negotiate load board loads. Hell, probably forgot how by now, lol. Luckily my truck is exempt from e logs. Don't know how some guys are going to get thru that. Planning I guess. Anyway, this thread brought back some memories. Good and bad. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Keep the sunny side up and the dirty side down.

Come on Man .30 cents per mile in fuel? Let say he is getting 7 mpg that means he has to buy his fuel below 2.10 a gallon. We didn't account for IFTA yet. .30 a mile for payment let's say his payment is 2500.00 that means he has to run 8333 miles a month it's in the ball park. What about insurance I am sure he is paying at least 500.00 per month so on that 8333 miles per month his insurance is 6 cents per mile. How about some reserve fund for repairs I have a brand new 2016 I put away .15 cents a mile a little heavy yes but safe. Can we toss another .07 cents per mile for rainy day fund, health insurance etc. so now we're up to that's .88 cents a mile. And we didn't pay ourselves or the tax man yet or the % to the boss.
I'm in his corner but you have to neon your A game all the time. He should have taking a higher paying load to a near by market Getting to the house is what it's about.

That's why there is cheap freight. Sucker born every minute. They talk the talk about not hauling cheap freight, and you see what happens. They get impatient and haul cheap freight that puts them on the negative side and still have something good to say about it. Yup, that's the new generation of trucking. What I get a kick out of most is "look at the big picture".......oh please......

I decided I don't want the headaches that come with the perks.
