Can anyone give some tips on finding companies that ship their own goods (using their own trucks/drivers) rather than using third party carriers? (For example, Walmart, Safeway, etc.) In addition, is there a way to narrow searches for these types of companies to specific areas of the country? Thank you for your help!

Transport Topics puts out a list of the top 100 private fleets every year. Just google their list. According to them the top two are actually PepsiCo and Sysco. Walmart is 4 and Tyson is 12.

I know there's a co.... their truck is red and their terminal is in TX... can't remember their name right now... but they haul their own product... plastic bags... but they also use brokers for the backhaul... they are a great co., pay very well... very good safety record and well maintained equipment... can't remember their name... darn!

Not too many private fleets do OTR, as it isn't desireable and cost effective. If you want to work for a private fleet other than Wallmart, you're going to have to drive a daycab.
