OK, in defense of the mechanic...... Lights and stuff have very low amp draw on the batteries. Starter will cause a weak battery to fail due to BIG draw. Could be a bad plate in the battery shorting under heavy load. Or a bad cable doing basically the same thing. A simple battery load test will show this.

The report is that one of the batteries tested bad, and they replaced it. They also said there was some corrosion and some loose battery cables on the other end near the solenoid. they also did a hood latch recall, no charge. $320 bill for a battery, "shop supplies" and labor. Haven't seen the bill for the two service calls yet....and my first load back? 260 mi run from Iowa City, IA to Manteno, IL. go figure.....

OH...and my DM says "oh i thought you still wanted off for thanksgiving". you kidding me???

Not trying to rub salt in an open $$$ wound, but $320 for a loose battery cable you could have tightened yourself in two seconds? Of course the shop had to find something else wrong. They wont stay in business if all they did was tighten the battery cable and charge ya $.50 for their trouble.

Batteries are under $100 each. Your truck probably has 4 batteries in it, and will start just fine with a couple of them bad. Somebody seen you coming a mile away.

Like I said twice previously, it was just a loose battery cable. Too bad you didnt take the time to check that connection...

Dude, if i knew that was the problem, u think i would have done that, not to mention saved all that $$ i ended up either losing or not making??

But here is an update for ya.....Was in Greensboro, NC this morning, dropped my MT trailer, then bobtailed over to where the preloaded trls are at. I stopped and had to wait for security to let me on the lot where the loaded trls were at. In the meantime, i shut the truck off to let my dog out to take a crap. And you guessed it.....truck did the SAME EXACT THING that happened to me friday night....turn the key, and NOTHING. Lucky for me, i was sitting on a hill, so i released my parking brake let it roll forward about a foot, and BINGO was his name-o.......she started right up like nothing wrong.

Which leads me to my new therory. You take your truck into a dealership, tell them "hey i think the starter needs replaced". But their attitude is "i'm not going to let some young punk kid tell me whats wrong with the truck...he just drives it...he's no mechanic...so ill tell HIM whats wrong with it". Which could be true....but still thinkin they want to "find" something ELSE wrong with the truck that they can bill me for rather than replace the starter which is covered under warranty, which they wouldn't be able to bill me/make money off me, for. whatdoyathinkbouthat?

    peckerwoods....

Just thinking out loud here, but could the truck be a lemon as to why it was given up by the previous lease operator?

i've got the maintence records from both swift and KW, and its seen the shop about as often as my new volvo i drove since early 2009 (and put 200k on it)

a 'lemon', to me, means you take a vehicle in, get work done, then something else goes wrong with it in a matter of a week or two, and you go in for that, then again, and again. Usually, if you take a truck in because its developed a problem, then the mechanic "fixes" it, and the same problem occurs, under the exact same circumstances....ususally it dont mean the vehicle is a lemon.....just means the mechanic who "fixed" it is a "dee dee dee".

makes perfect sense to me. A shop dont want to fix something under warranty, cause then they'd not make any money. It HAS to be another problem that isnt covered under warranty, so they can bill me, and thus make money. Kinda like doctors who perscribe meds, but those meds dont do the trick, then you go back, and you keep going back. and each time you go back......cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching for the doctor. Why solve the problem by making it right/fixing it, when you can get them to come back agian and again and again. think of how much more money you can make.......man, i'm in the wrong line of work.....

    I can think of 2 possibility's.
One would be that the solenoid is loosing ground. This can happen if it goes bad inside or if it gets loose on the firewall.

Other option is a bad spot on the starter. This happens allot with trucks that use the Opti idle/ TAS/ Icon systems.
Bumping the truck forward can get the starter off the bad spot.

Actually just thought of a third.
If moving the truck is changing the frame angle you may want to check all ground straps on the truck. You could have one that is intermittently loosing connection.

For someone will all the TRUCKING BUSINESS experience you stated you have on another thread , you should know that the FACTORY pays the dealers for warranty work , althogh at a lesser rate than the customer gets charged but its not FREE.

    $320.00 for 1 battery :biggrin_2559:

    outerspacehillbilly Thanks this.
