Hi all, I am looking for input on what to do for a 01 Mack E7 that is rarely used. Driven less than 5K miles (400 hours) per year but it idles alot (used for dumpster roll-off) 12 miles/hr average.
Oil analysis shows a small coolant leak according to blackstone oil lab.
My question is; is it worth doing any expensive repair/diagnostic work if the truck will work at this rate for a few more years? Or do more frequent oil changes (say every 125 hrs) and create a baseline for the oil analysis to monitor? I am looking for your thoughts and thank you!

    jamespmack Thanks this.

Yes its is worth your time. It could be as simple as a oil cooler.

Buy a radiator pressure tester for 50 bucks. Autozone might let you rent or sign one out for free also
Pump up the system and watch to see if the gauge needle drops .

If it does you have a leak. Could be head gasket or cylinder sleeve o rings worst case.

Best case a cooler is leaking

    Bad things never get better.

It might not be worth doing expensive work, but it is definitely worth checking to see if it needs expensive work.

Would suck for you to defer maintenance until it has a severe problem, then get told that you could have fixed it the year before it failed for $150 bucks.

Ruthless and Bean Jr. Thank this.
