I'm a reefer driver but I'm interested in learning all trades of the trucking industry so I don't have restrictions. I've never done flatbed but keep shying away because I have had a number of knee injuries on the same right knee. Torn ACL, torn MCL, and a dislocated knee cap. 1 surgery. Is flatbed rough on the knees?

    Boondock Thanks this.

I have numerous injuries to my left like you. Currently its alittle loose. I double clutch and pull a covered wagon.

What I will say is this. And everyone should do this regardless of trailer or job. Slow down. Think about what your doing. Walk and move slower putting thought into your step and position. Dont rush. Try and stay in good physical shape, and don't carry any extra body weight. I understand that last one is hard. I struggle with it.

Do Not Jump off of anything. I use a ladder to get on or off trailer.

You will be miserable working open deck. It works all aspects of your body pretty good.
The climbing, pushing, pulling things like tarps and throwing straps and chains. You may end up in constant pain from all the activities. OTC pain relief products will be your friend.

You’ll be fine just don’t jump off of the trailers

Depends on your knee. I have a bad knee that I swore I tore my meniscus. Got X-ray and MRI and they found nothing. Thought I was going crazy. It starts to really hurt when I’m working on truck climbing up and down on the engine. Yours may be fine, others may not be. All depends on the individual.

My future MIL has two blown out knees, two blown out shoulders and a horrible back. She is hunched over and limps. Looks like a bridge troll walking around. Cant lift her arms very high. She gets around just fine and never complains. But shes a very stubborn woman form Philly…….which is why she ended up in this condition in the first place.

I’d stay away from flatbed with bad knee.
Climbing on top of loads, climbing off loads, duck walking while rolling up tarps.

Tanker would be easier and more profitable.

My opinion is open deck is harder on bad shoulder than bad knee. - If you are concerned about it, and you should. You have lots of work done to your poor knee. Stay long haul Reefer.
