Get rid of authority to lease on?

Good idea. It depends on your wife also. Mine isn’t the best cleaner or the best cook. But she’s a great business partner and fantastic mother to our son. Nobody is great at everything so play to your strengths. If your goals are more trucks one day you both should learn everything now.

You can do it all yourself, but it also adds up and can make it seem mentally not feasible.

 

if you haven't driven at all in 10 years, you can take the CDL test again to get your licence renewed, get authority/insurance set up and a truck ready to go and just start moving freight again? If you had enough stacked up to get started again all at once, you could take a pretty long sabbatical and be able to get right back to it quick. i can't see doing anything other than this for the rest of my life, if the point of a job is to make money to pay your bills, i don't see any more lucrative option than being an owner operator. work as much as you want, when you want, for as long as you want, until you've earned as much as you need, then be able to get back to your life without having to ask anybodies permission or give up any kind of pecking order.

 

My license is current. I never gave up my license, I always kept it because I figured at some point I would need it.

What I don't have is recent experience, which the insurance companies require for you to be able to lease on anywhere. Or even to get a job somewhere.

So for me, getting my authority is really the only option in this industry anyway.

I am fortunate that financially I can do that. I'm fortunate that I have a nice tractor and a new engine and a place to work on it and mechanical skills and whatever else.

I think some people look at getting your Authority as something wonderful exciting liberating, having an edge on other people or however you want to say it.

Some people look down on guys that are leased on, some guys that want to get their Authority probably think it's easy and there's nothing to it. I have researched this for a long time and there's plenty to it. If I had a carrier that would lease me on and I could just go to work and get paid well and have a certain level of freedom and not chase money get paid detention, TONU, etc etc etc I would certainly do that. Some people make more with their Authority some people make less but sometimes it is six of one half a dozen of another.

It's not particularly something that I've always wanted to do, but at this point for me it's just something that needs to be done.

So I will take the good with the bad and be thankful for the opportunity, embrace it, and make the best out of it.

 

dang that sucks, there's always something to get in the way. so after a long time of no driving, even if you have enough $$ to get started again, you have to be a company zombie for 6 months again to get 'experience' in order to get your own operation rolling again? or it's just that most insurance companies want to see experience to insure you, otherwise you have to pay crazy high rates? i'd pay a lot up front to retain autonomy.

 

Actually for me to start up with my own authority the insurance isn't that crazy.

Again, I guess I'm fortunate.
