Sure, the written parts can't be that hard to learn...
But, the part about getting to actually learn how and DRIVE a truck for a while with a permit and then having a truck to test with... Any ideas? What interesting ways have people done this?

So do you want a job after you get a cdl or no?
Longarm Thanks this. -
Apply to a moving company and get your CDL for free! Before anyone tells you it can't be done:............... It CAN
-
And just hope you are in shape enough for the actual moving part.
And Dinomite is right about one thing.
If you want a job, normally you will have to have the school to get it.Dinomite Thanks this. -
the school is the best option. i mean how many people do you know that will just volunteer their truck for a road test with an inexperienced driver? its not you dont get me wrong . its the insurance companies, there are very very few that would pay for the truck if it gets wrecked while you are driving it. then the owner is out of a very expensive ride. and the school will place you with a company after graduating if you dont do like i did and get a speeding ticket just before graduation. but now that is off my record and im ready to go to work, hopefully. oh and i know this because i tried to borrow several trucks, and i got the same answer from all of them which was no, but h## no!!

An experienced truck driver can command over 65,000 per year. That is the same money as a school teacher makes. (After they have worked a couple of years.) In order to be a school teacher one has to attend a college and earn a degree. College cost around $15,000 a year. So a teacher has invested $60,000 before they see a dime. They are also 4 years older. You are asking how you can make the big bucks without putting any skin in the game. If it was easy no one would pay you for your skill.
What you should be asking is, where can I go to improve my driving skills to make me a better Professional Driver? Are you by chance a member of the ME generation? There once was a President named JFK. He said, "Ask not what your country can do for you but rather ask what you can do for your country." Now we have a man that believes we should just give every one stuff without them having to earn it.
Nothing in life that is worth anything is free. You can find someone who will rent you a pick up truck and a trailer both equipped with Air Brakes. You can take your test in that. If you pass, you might be able to talk someone into making you a co driver. You might even become good enough to work in this industry. But you will never be happy taking the short cuts.
There was a Congressman from my home town. His name was Jerry Litton. He was my friend. He was killed in 1976 when the left engine of the plane he was riding in broke a crankshaft on take off. The plane stalled and went into the a flat spin. It burned killing Jerry, his wife Sharon, their two children Scott and Linda. The Pilot Paul Rupp, Jr. and his son Paul Rupp III. Jerry had won the primary for US Senate that night and was on the way to the victory party. Jerry's favorite quote was, "Blessed is the man who dreams dreams and is willing to pay the price to see them come true."
You need to do things the right way, you need to become the best driver you can possibly be. Professional drivers make a good living in this industry. Short cut takers do not last.Moosetek13, Tonythetruckerdude, bubbaray30 and 2 others Thank this. -
Buy a truck and a trailer and pay somebody to ride with you? Trailers are easy to come by, its the power unit you're going to have to worry about. And no most people don't want to rent you their truck for a day so you can take your cdl test. Some owner operators are willing to train a person I find them to be somewhat crazy putting their livlyhood in the hands of somebody that has never been in a truck before. Problem is after you get your license finding somebody to bring you on. Maverick will hire you but that's the only one I've heard of. Cept for a couple maybe local small outfits.

The written parts are at the top of this page under "CDL Practice Tests" ; all the answers are there.
The difficult parts are the driving test at the DMV and passing the pre-trip at the DMV. You must furnish a truck & trailer for that also. Much less headache to just go to school. -
I got my permit and did the written part on my own. For the driving part though, you do want a school. Assuming you could find someone to drive with you and truck to practice and test in......You still will have trouble getting a job with out a school backing you.

When I was with Overnite Transportation, I trained several drivers who never had stepped a foot in a truck. These men were hired "off the street" as part-time dock workers and expressed a desire to learn to drive. They got their "learner's permit" and Overnite allowed me to trained them. Once they felt that they could pass the CDL test and get their CDL, arrangements were made with DMV for me to bring the person to the location where they were road tested. And I might add, everyone that I took, came away with their CDLs.
BTW, this is exactly how my son learned and obtained his CDL and he now is a "feeder driver" for UPS.
Remember, there is more than one way to "skin a cat".Tonythetruckerdude Thanks this.
