A question mainly for the OTR guys. How did you learn to overcome it during your first year or so on the road? We sacrifice a lot to be out there on the road, we leave friends and families behind and get no thanks for devoting our lives to the job. It's not always the easiest way to live, but it can be a great ride. I like to always have some good tunes playing on my iPod or Sirius while I'm driving. When I park I usually call home, watch comedies on the laptop, listen to the guys on the cb or read. Anything to keep my mind occupied. What's your method of staying sane? Lately coming here has helped tremendously, even though I'm still new to the forums I love reading the different threads and posts, some are really funny and others remind me why I'm doing this in the first place.

You have a laptop, so I'd invest in a webcam (or 2...they're pretty inexpensive). Then sign up for Skype and you could videochat with your family at home which I do (if there's a computer at home of course). I don't listen on the cb anymore...too many guys either trying to start fights or see how many F-bombs they can drop into a sentence.

    I love being by myself.
Always did Scouts when I was younger too, so never had a problem with it.

don't think ya do. i got lucky and was able to find a gig where i don't HAVE to be out more than 6 days unless i want to. course, if i want to make better money, i need to stay out longer.

anyway, to kill time, videos on the phone, call home, sleep, walk or play with the dog. whatever i can to fill the time not driving.

the only friends I have are other truck drivers, it seems to me the ones that try to hold on to the way things used to be (before driving) are the ones that struggle the most. Try to stay focused on why you're out here to begin with.

E-Man-Have you ever been out of the US? Remember this even if your coast to coast you are HOME. You can call anytime, as long as you want. I have made good friendships over the road.So remember, your working at home. Mike-Z

it really helps to be a loner, they do the best out here. If you are out here long enough, you will find yourself becoming a loner. If not, laptops help, books, take up a foriegn langauge, try to be outgoing and strike up conversations with other drivers. Eventually you will adjust.
