I am trying to avoid a problem at my Texas class b cdl Road Test on 5/20/19.
I am a mechanic for a San Antonio construction company and need my CDL Class B to drive our new 33k service truck.I have passed my written test and have my permit in hand. So my next step was to schedule my road test. No big deal right. Wrong. The San Antonio area does not have any availabilty for road test until July 2019 which is over 45 days out. So i got lucky and booked an appointment in Corpus Christi (180 miles away) for next Monday. Now my question is how can a legal get the truck to Corpus on Monday Morning for testing. We have other CDL drivers with the company but none of them will be able to cancel a days work to ride with me to Corpus for testing. My dad has a Non CDL Class A which I believe that would allow him to drive the truck to Corpus. I am just not sure if the Testing site will give us a problem with the non cdl class A or if our company insurance will allow it. The last thing I want is to be stuck in Corpus with a red tagged truck and not being able to take my road test. A solution might be If there is any CDL drivers out there that would like to ride co pilot for the day we should be back in San Antonio by 3pm and I will pay you for your time. Please share you thoughts

Call the DMV and ask them if your father can legally drive the truck.

    If so...

Check with your company and verify that they will allow your father to drive the truck.

If not, see if your company would be willing to hire a driver from a temp agency for a day to drive the truck.

If not, see if your company might be willing to pay all or part of the cost of towing the truck.

I really do not see many cheap, easy solutions for you if your father cannot help you. Most companies are rightfully a bit worried about allowing non-employees to drive their vehicles.

One other possibility might be to contact a CDL-B training school in the area of the test and see if you can pay to take a test in one of their vehicles.

Rent a local truck from a local driving school there.

    Shower Thought...

I am curious if a large moving van could be used to take a class B test? You do not need a CDL to operate a moving van, but it IS of the appropriate size.

You have to have a cdl to rent one, he has to have a 26,001 lb gvw or more to qualify to use for a test, Texas is the same as most other states.

Hrm. I thought larger straight truck moving vans were like larger RV's. At least to the extent that they do not require a special license, even though they have a gvw over 26k.

My mistake if I am in error.

If your not needing an up to date mediacl card, you can go into your drivers license office and self certify as "Excepted Intrastate" or "Excepted Interstate". You CDL will remain active, you just be able to drive only in the Excepted categories. Or not drive class a at all. I self certified mine when I retired, just in case I might want to drive again.

It seems to me if your company wants you to drive their 33k service truck during the course of your work then they will find a way to get you and it to the testing center. I don’t see how this burden is on you to solve or how the company would even want anyone other then their own employees to be the licensed driver of the truck enroute to the test place.
