One thing I learned as a Landstar BCO is, loads there are like playing chess. You have to think at least 1 or 2 moves ahead. I learned the hard way to check what freight is like in the destination area before booking a load from an agent. I got stuck in the same situation you're talking about more than once. If freight isn't good in the destination area, then the load needs to be a better paying load to cover the cost of a long deadhead out to a decent freight area. I went from port of Long Beach under a nice light, decent paying load all the way to Raymond, NH...but ended up deadheading back all the way to Pittsburg before I found a decent load.

I'm not with landstar now ; but If you are thinking of going there ; try making contacts with drivers that have been there a long time and know good agents that pay well, a good amount of the best loads never get on landstar s load board ; they use there established drivers ; so it's best to know as many bcos. As possible ; government loads pay really good there and trade shows ; also flatbed was doing real good

I had a Lockheed martin load out of Dallas ; that paid really good and it had a great agent ; but it left me in an area I had to do a bit of deadhead to get to another good paying load; they just opened a new operating center in ft worth

I can venture a guess that I won't be going to P&G Friday to pick up...why? Because I have a newer trailer with composite (or metal) lining inside instead of busted up, trashy plywood(or in our trailers case, recycled mobile home paneling). I can feel karma coming on strong, neck & neck with Murphy and his law.
